This is a converted convent which retains many of the original features. Rooms are comfortable and scrupulously clean (my wife insisted I say that) and breakfast is very good. Never managed to try all of the jams, chutneys and honey despite my best efforts! walking distance of the town centre and lovely view of the ilheu as well.
It is definitely a work in progress and I would love to go back and see how the building has changed in a year or two. We would stay here again.

Room Tip: First floor is probably better for the views.

We booked this through Booking.com as usual, about 3 months ahead. Arrived at the hotel after two days of travelling to get there only to be told that they had no rooms available! We spent 3 hours, looking on their computer and showing them our booking - which was plainly there, and showing them our copies as well, but somehow they had mislaid our booking and given our rooms away to other people.

When they finally realised and admitted their mistake, they found us a camping place instead as all other hotels were of course fully booked. We were not offered any sort lf compensation and its frightening to think what we would have done if they had not found this campsite for us as we are both over 60 and could not possibly have slept in the open.

We were shown round the hotel to see if they could find a room! However we noted it was very damp and cold and were glad in the end not to be staying there.

My advice to anyone booking this hotel is to double check with them several times to make sure they do have your correct booking details and rooms available - and good luck!

Room Tip: Keep on phoning them!

Dear friend
The engine in your reservation was not totally ours.
Your booking, booking leaves us only 1 room when you wanted 2.
We helped her to get stuck in na excelente farm in the furnas, so the lady asked for furnas.
You leave here with such regret that you will not stay here.
And i deeply regretted that i had not stayed.
With much like i will have to receive it again

We stayed here for 7 days in mid September and loved it. It is a labyrinth like beautiful building with courtyards, amazing view of the ocean and the Vila Franca do Campo Islet, simple and tasteful decoration. Rooms are spacious, staff is smiling and kind and ambiance is terrific. It has a big garden and a pool among greens which makes you want to stay longer and kill some time in the hotel forgetting your reason to be there: to see the island.

There is always plenty of food at the breakfast table and there is one table so you have to sit with other guests which is nice for socialisation. Every day, an egg, 3-4 types of cheese, 3 types of marmelade, butter, honey, bread are served. If I was asked what I would change, I would not change anything but make breakfast not the same every day but with a bit of a wider selection so there wouldn't be room for boredom. But this is not a criticism, just a suggestion.

As I said, I loved this place and it became my most favourite with its soul behind the stone walls, within its garden of beauty.

Room Tip: Courtyard at the entrance is full of trees, so the view of rooms facing here are just trees which makes room dark.

I really can't say more nice things than have already been shared. This is a unique experience with wonderful and thoughtful service. We arrived well before check in (about 8:30 am) and were greeted with a ready room and offered breakfast as we walked in the door before even unloading the car. Parking is easy and the gas station next door makes it very easy to fill your rental before returning it at the airport. The hotel is very easy to find and get to, plus is extremely convenient to everything in this small town. The views from the roof are amazing. Take the opportunity to wander around the whole building which is not only left open to explore but is appropriately decorated. The pineapple greenhouses on the grounds are a fun peek into the island's industry.

Here are the good things:
* This really is a beautiful building and very atmospheric
* In summer the large room was cool and very pleasant
* Nice bathroom
* Free parking
* Easy walk into town
* Lovely breakfast with fresh home grown pineapple
* Good sized swimming pool in quiet garden
* Very close to supermarket where you can buy picnic supplies - there is no restaurant/cafe at the hotel
* Free wifi, but only in the wifi room.

You need to be aware that this could be such a fantastic hotel, and elsewhere it would have been taken in hand by an upmarket chain and be eye-wateringly expensive. Everything feels rather dated, so when booking just be aware this is more fabulous B&B than smart hotel.

Room Tip: If you want a sea view you need to ask for a 2nd floor room.
