“Picturesque and charming”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 June 2010

Disregard the postings about lack of friendliness -- we received a wonderful welcome from the English-speaking proprietors, who offered good dining and touring suggestions. The hotel has a pretty breakfast area in a garden and is within walking distance of Maia, a charming, untouristic town. It is just a few miles from an interesting tea plantation and easy driving to Furnas. Though the furnishings are eclectic rather than glitzy, the effect is charming and everything is spotlessly clean. This was a real find.

I stayed for a week in this lovely place. The house & garden are truely amazing. My room and & bathroom were clean and spacious.
The German owners/managers created a very friendly and familiar atmosphere. Almost every evening, we were sitting in front of the house chatting and listening to their stories about the island.
Don't expect all the comfort of a 5 star hotel. There is no TV in the room (at least wasn't in mine) and there is no 24 hour room service. But that fits perfectly with the relaxing environment. And if you really miss total reachability, bring your laptop, there is free wireless internet...

Well, we loved this place, and it suited us very well indeed. It sets out to be independent, different and relaxing, and is a nice quiet spot. The owners were absolutely charming and judged it well whether you wanted to chat or be left in peace and quiet. The place is an ideal base for touring the island. We are walkers, and so we could return every evening to a cold beer or two, a swim in the pool, a stroll down to the village to one of the restaurants, or just chill on
the patio (they can rustle up light meals for you too). If you want lots of facilities etc, they don't have it, so its the wrong place for you.
You do need a car really to get about the island (although there are buses) and the village of Maia has only 2 restaurants really (although both were great). Rooms were spacious and simple. Highly recommended!

  • Liked — peace and quiet, style, and the setting
  • Disliked — very little I didn't like

On a vacation to Sao Miguel we came across this lovely old inn. as we
drove through the small town of Maia. My husband and I stopped to look around the premises, and were surprised to find that the building is much more charming than the owner! When we asked questions about the place (we actually thought it would be a nice place to stay at with our family next time we visit the island) we were made to feel very unwelcomed by the wife. Her cold, dismissive demeanor was truly a mismatch with the friendly personalities of the locals. Hopefully, if she lives there long enough, it will rub in...

we stayed in this beautiful old rambling house for 2 nights. <our room was lovely, wood floors and nice big bathroom. the hosts are german, and friendly. our breakfast was nice with eggs cooked to order. <however, the town its in, <maia, has nothing to do, and very little in the way of places to eat. <you must have a car here. also, there are many dogs in the area, they bark all night some of them. one across the street, sits on the roof of the house and barks at everything that goes by. now, it was cool, and we kept the windows closed which helped, but in the summer, you would get no sleep!
