We have just returned from a wonderful stay at the marina rio .
The hotel is the cleanest I have ever stayed in! Room cleaned every day . The staff are ALL wonderful , helpful and very friendly it really feels like a genuine family run hotel .
The breakfast was amazing fresh and delicious every day .
The location is great , right opposite marina and a short walk from old town . Our room was 3rd floor marina facing and we loved watching the going’s on in the marina from the balcony. The rooms and the back face the town and bus station but would get the sun.
We used the pool and sunbathing area on the roof on the warmer days which was again immaculate.
I would recommend this hotel as an ideal place to stay in Lagos

The Good:
Had pre-visit email asking if we had specific requirements to which we received prompt replies to requests and we received a warm welcome from the reception staff.
The location is great for old town and the marina.
The breakfast food was fine
The hotel is spotlessly clean and the staff are very pleasant and accommodating.

The not so good:
I'm a light sleeper so checked with the hotel prior to stay that I would be allocated a higher sea view room and was assured that road noise was minimal due to the double glazing. We were allocated a room on the 2nd floor, one below top.
Luckily I took ear plugs. There is quite a lot of traffic noise from the main road in front of the hotel. Additionally, due to the open-plan design of the hotel and the use of hard materials, every sound in the hotel is echoed up the open stairwell and into the open area on every floor and into the bedrooms. The traditional tiles on the floor transmit every noise including furniture being dragged on upper floors by guests and cleaners and the rolling of suitcases. Conversations on the ground floor can be heard on the top floor. Nothing really the hotel can do about it other than change the floor covering so there seemed no point in complaining.
As others have reported, the breakfast area is poorly laid out and too small for the number of diners. As a result there is a bit of a scrum to shuffle past seated guests and those queuing for the buffet food.
As mentioned the hotel is spotless with the floors cleaned and polished seemingly every day. Unfortunately this leaves a residual smell in the bedroom of cleaning fluid reminiscent of bleach which is unpleasant.
We didn’t use the bar or lounge, they looked sterile and unwelcoming located in the corner of the ground floor which is dominated by the stairs and reception area.
Summary:
It’s a well located, well run, clean hotel with dated design features. Would we return? No, but the things that bothered us may not bother you and you will have a lovely stay.
Note that the hotel emailed me on our return to ask that if we had a good stay to do a Trip Advisor review and if not, to write to them directly. This may explain the balance of good reviews but I felt it fair to the TA community to report as we found.

Dear Guest,
We are very much obliged to receive the evaluation of your stay with us. We thank you for being very objective, and also admitting to be a light sleeper because otherwise we wouldn't have any clients in our hotel. However, we do understand your point of view and can inform you that the hotel will close next winter for refurbishing, and one of the main items to be changed will be the floor covering as well as new bedroom doors. So, perhaps you should try to visit us again after conclusion of those works. We would be very happy to welcome you again.
Kind regards,
Gabriele M. Gomes

Only reason I say not great is becasue if you dont get a marina front room your listining an looking at a parking lot full of busses and the bus transfer station. Looked like all rooms had a small balcony.. and everythign was spotless. Nice getaway is the roof top lounge chairs tables and a pretty cool little pool. gret place to enjoy a view of the marina and ocean in the distance, some wine cheese and bread from the local grocery store just a couple of blocks from the hotel. Old town and popular beach all within 5-10 min walking distance. We would stay again.... but would try to get a room with a better view. Breakfast was fantastic !!!!!!!

Room Tip: Any room marina front

It's a nice hotel, but two flaws prevent it from being great:
- Breakfast is very limited and served in a small room. For instance, hot pre-prepared food is limited to eggs or bacon (and most days, also beans). The only thing that changed daily is the way the eggs are cooked.
- Also, room soundproofing is weak (especially doors and windows).

Apart from these two problems, I'd recommend it.

Dear Guest,

In first place we thank you for your time to write this review, as well for the constructive criticism.
As for the breakfast, we are confined to the space available which sometimes seems to be to small. Therefore the selection of our breakfast items is also confined to a limited space. But we try to give as much choice as possible and get very good reviews. You have to consider that this is still called a continental breakfast and not some kind of brunch/american breakfast, although we also serve sausages and baked beans which you didn't mention
The hotel will undergo a major renovation during the coming winter when the room doors will be replaced. The window frames are already renovated since 2016 and are soundproof,so this could not be an issue.
However, we thank you very much for your recommendation.
Best regards,
Gabriele M. Gomes

From arriving to departing we could not fault anything regarding our two week stay in this fabulous hotel. The people on reception are always charming, courteous and helpful at all times. Our room was on the second floor with a marina view and we were extremely comfortable. The room servicing was excellent. The breakfast room was delightful and the lovely food was continually being replenished by the very hard working staff. The situation of the hotel is in a perfect location for the town and the beach.
We are looking forward very much to returning in 2019.

Room Tip: Morning sun ask for a marina view room.
