Owner description: Ypres (now Ieper) is a town in the Province of West Flanders. The Memorial is situated at the eastern side of the town on the road to Menin (Menen) and Courtrai (Kortrijk). The YPRES (MENIN GATE) MEMORIAL now bears the names of more than 54,000 officers and men whose graves are not known. The memorial, designed by Sir Reginald Blomfield with sculpture by Sir William Reid-Dick, was unveiled by Lord Plumer on 24 July 1927. Each night at 8 pm the traffic is stopped at the Menin Gate while members of the local Fire Brigade sound the Last Post in the roadway under the Memorial's arches.

The ceremony takes place at 8.00 every evening. You will need to make sure you arrive early as this is still a very well attended event which is as it should be.

So we visited a ww1 graveyard in France to visit an ancestor, and we stayed over night in Belgium. In the morning my parents suggested to visit here and I was blown away by it all so much so to the point I found one of our ancestors on the wall. The local area were so friendly and the shops were lovely too with lots of different nick naks to buy.
We are definitely going to do another visit here again.

A very moving Experience as today it was the British solders on parade as well as a British brass band ran like clock work to the minuet

The whole area is an overload of emotions but Menin Gate sums up the futility of war. Go at 8.00pm for Last Post, take some Kleenex.

We stayed in Ypres so that we could experience the 8:00 nightly tribute staged here. The history is astounding and the ceremony is very moving. We went on a night when the normal service was added to by a squad of Scottish bagpipers and drummers. Would love to see them again. It was a busy night and we were not in position to see very well, so please do go early. We were also surrounded by a group of loud talkers that really distracted. As a visitor, I didn't feel comfortable shushing them, but wish I had.
