We had spent an hour or so walking around a slightly chilly and overcast Bruges, looking for somewhere with a menu that had light fish dishes as my girlfriend was just getting over a dodgy tummy. We wanted something better than just one of the tourist cafes but nothing too fancy. With good fortune we stumbled across Au Petit Grand. We were through the door literally seconds after it opened and were met with warmth, kindness and great charm. The restaurant interior is lovely and the food to match.
My girlfriend had the Sole, simply but perfectly cooked, with a nice salad. I had the King Prawns with tomato and garlic, with frites, which was absolutely delicious. The prawns were huge, the biggest I'd ever seen. We regretted we couldn't take the shells back with us to make one of Rick Stein's
For dessert I had the Profiteroles, filled with ice-cream and covered with a lovely chocolate sauce.
Highly recommend Au Petit Grand. Nothing pretentious, just really good ingredients, cooked with great care and understanding, and lovely friendly service.
