I recently arrived home from a disgusting and distasteful one night stay at a 1* hotel.
Hotel Barry is the name, situated in the 'heart of Brussels' - more like...the down-trodden area of the city (like Peckham for London or Bronx for New York).
I don't know how to start my mini-rant of this 'establishment', so I'm going to analyse the introduction and information stated on their cheaply early-2000 like website.

They start by presenting themselves as a friendly and warm hotel, reassuring the explorer (who is not yet even staying at the hotel) as a pleasant one. Ours (I was among the group of of 37, civilised and sophisticated English students), was most certainly not that.

Hotel Barry describes their rooms as 'comfortable'. Well, none were certainly not. For a start, none of the doors within the bedrooms have locks, so no lock for the toilet, nor the shower - for both genders, that can strip away our common dignity and some may even feel sodomised, with the fact that random strangers can walk through your door at any moment in time.

In addition, they also say that the rooms were fully equipped with a shower and/or bathroom. Yes, this may be so, but for many (I am not sure about this, but mine was certainly) the shower was mouldy and felt like it has not been cleaned since Cliff Richard had his latest number one single. The television was useless, you could not control the remote, and it was stuck on one channel (from my friends, each of us had a different channel, I had the Belgium Parliament TV channel which was dire). Additionally, another misleading quote from the website was a direct telephone line, which was completely tripe, I couldn't ring out the hotel, let alone my family in London.

Now onto downstairs, the kitchen/dining area was terrible, the food was stale and very basic (miniature baguette loaf, stale croissant, jam/butter and a cheap vending machine for your orange juice - placed on the tables at 1am in the morning! They didn't even serve the morning hot drinks like coffee or hot chocolate, shocking!). We could clearly see the staff had so much to do, seeming breakfast was the basic breads and a orange juice dispenser, the main example of this was the old hag which was sitting down on stall smoking a cigarette in the kitchen, quite clearly a health hazard, not to mention illegal in some countries! In the dining area, one or two tables were not used, due to damp on the walls and a leak onto the floor, downright disgraceful in my opinion!

Now, this wasn't even the worse of it! Oh no! Cockroaches everywhere, scuttling and rummaging around secretly. Used condoms under mattresses and lying around on the stairs, the smell of dried vomit in many rooms, not to mention a sticky unknown substance on the floor in our room. Now, to top this off, the cherry on the bun, the icing on the cake - the kitchen smelt of bacon, now that could be a good thing, the smell of a greasy full-english breakfast to start the day, no matter how cheap and greasy it is. But due to there being an arson attack the night before we arrived which damaged the rooms above, really put us off. We were welcomed with a group of Turks discarding the burnt items in the skip. A friend of mine even got a refund due to the atrocity his room was left in - 10 euros....says it all.

Budget, poor and disgraceful. The worst place imaginary, the staff barely did anything helpful to arrive, the breakfast was so poor, the food was terrible. This hotel was so S*** it just needs to close its doors, the hotel wasn't a hotel you could see portrayed on media or film like Fawlty Towers, Crossroads Motel or the Black and White Lodge. Never staying here again, and suggest to anyone never to stay here, not even for a night. I rather stay at Bates Motel and be slaughtered to death by a psychopathic 'old lady'.

Never ever again.

Room Tip: Preferably not on the top floor where the fire took place, then again....no floors. Don't stay here!

On a local square, very basic but very clean and very cheap. Good central location about 5 mins to Grand Place. Not the EU Side. near to Gara Midi but "dodgy" walk but that really is Brussels as it is overall a bit of a dump or at least walking in nice areas and then suddenly is all look a bit dodgy. Next to a Metro Stop as well. Near to Rue de Midi.

Friendly staff at Hotel barry and if your on a budget, it ticks all the boxes

Hotel was OK category. Rooms too small, but OK for 1 night. Cleaning of toilet and replacement of toilet equipments is a must at this hotel. About 2 kms from midi station, but we can walk. Price is also OK.

Only appropriate if you are looking for a one night stay over if the heart of Brussels. Within 5 mins walking distance from Brussels South Train Station. Toilet wasn't clean and rooms were dodgy. Area is also not so safe at night. However, for us it was ok as we were only looking for a place to sleep for one night before we were on our way.
