“Wonderful Holiday Weekend”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 May 2012

Our stay at the Metropole Hotel over the Memorial day weekend was fanastic. My family enjoy a very cute small room with a balcony the first 2 days and then the hotel up graded us to a beautiful suite because of plumbing problems with the shower. The hotel is very old but a very nice change. The staff was very polite and generous for the upgrade. The down side was it's not a kid friendly hotel, my son was bored. It's better for a romantic getaway.
The location was perfect, 5 miute walk to Grand Place .

We stayed just the one night at this fantastic old hotel that oozed style. Couldn't quite work out why it was so cheap. About EUR125 including breakfast. Rooms a little dated in amenities, but the whole hotel was dripping with character, as well as being perfectly located, about 10 minute walk from Grand Place and easy to access Metro outside front door.

Stayed here three times as it was an favourite of the person who had my job before me. Now no longer using it as an occasional Brussels base. The lobby, lift and cafe and bar and simply beautiful, as it the staircase and c.1930s vintage elevator.

The rooms though, range from tired and in need of refurbishment to positively shabby and far too small for the price.

Stay for the marvellous fin de siècle grandeur but try and spend as little time as possible in the rooms. Service middling, not great; not poor.

Be aware that the road to the north west, Adolphe Maxlaan is part of one of Brussels' red light districts with sex shops open all night and terrifying junkies asking if you'd like a date. Do not walk back to the hotel from Rogier metro stop, use the de Broukere stop even if it means changing lines for just one stop.

I simply cannot understand how others have found this great old hotel to be anything but top-level. We stayed there twice in recent weeks and found it a lovely place, elegantly designed and wonderfully run. Perfectly situated in Brussels, just a short walk from the city's grand attractions, the Metropole exudes qualityat every turn. The rooms are spacious; clean, of course; perfectly maintained. The facilities are terrific, including an exscellent breakfast. The charm is warm and welcoming while the staff is professional, courteous and extremely helpful. This is a very good place to stay.

We stayed in the Metropole because of its central location and beautiful decor, but we were disappointed for a couple of reasons. The hotel in the main areas is stunning, the location is excellent but the room we had was tired and had definitely seen better days.

1) from the main area there were 3 lifts we could find, two were out of order during the whole of our stay.
2) After the first night I noticed there was blood on the duvet cover (about the size of a thumbnail, it was located on a corner of the duvet) this blood was NOT mine. I reported it to the front desk, the duvet cover was not changed (I even left the duvet cover with the blood showing so the maid could see it).
3) the shower cubical had no light and the shower head was clogged with lime scale. I reported it to the front desk, the light was promptly changed but the blocked shower head was not touched.

I emailed the hotel on its guest comments email address and so far I have heard nothing. I was so excited about this hotel but feel disappointed.
