“classic grand old hotel, great location for sightseeing”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 April 2012

Classic old hotel, with high ceilings in lobby with gold decor, old birdcage elevator, elegant lobby bar and dining room, great sidewalk bar for watching passerbyes. Located right near the centre of old Brussels, very convenient for walking-sightseeing to the Grand Place, Rue Neuve shopping street, Rue des Bouchers restaurants, art galleries and museums.

Room Tip: For a quiet room, try to get a room on an upper level on the rear side of the hotel (toward Rue Neuv...

We have just returned from a visit to Brussels and stayed at the Metropole for 4 nights. We don't like to stay at the commercial hotels and the Metropole clearly is not in their class. A very classy, elegant, old style hotel in the center of Brussels. The staff was friendly and efficient, breakfast copious and delicious and the room lovely.

Lot's of clouds and rain while we were there and in addition to everything else, there was a transit strike on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. We went to Brugge on Monday so that wasn't a problem but Tuesday was a bit soggy. Didn't make the trip any less pleasant though.

In all, great people, food and lodging, what more can you ask.

Regards,

M. Robinson

I always try to stay here when I go to Brussels. This hotel is nothing like the big international chains, and that's why I love it. The rooms are old-fashioned (in a good way), there is a rickety old elevator, and the decorations look like they haven't been changed in 100 years. Wonderful. A real highlight of our stay was coming back to the hotel after dinner in town to find a wonderful jazz pianist playing in the hotel bar (which was completely empty) and sitting down to enjoy the atmosphere for a while. I'll be back.

Sure, some of the rooms are looking just a little tired around the edges, but this is a tourist site in itself. I have stayed at a few classic hotels around the world that are justifiably famous, but this is one that is up there with some of these but it doesn't come with the price tag normally associated with such hotels. The staff were great, the rooms were large and the location was very convenient. But for me the highlight was simply experiencing the grandeur that is most obvious on the ground floor. The cafe next to the entrance was wonderful (though not exactly cheap) and felt like what one might have experienced 100 years ago. My girls (aged 5 and 8) who love playing 'olden days' really enjoyed it.

In terms of practicalities, we had two adjoining rooms that connected in a convenient manner. With 5 people we had a fold-away bed as well as two king beds. The bedding was good. The bathrooms varied in design between the rooms, but had everything that was needed and the free drinks in the room each day were very welcome. My work booked me one room and I booked the other direct through the hotel and they were very accommodating in linking the two bookings together. The breakfast was extensive and quite good quality. We had a late check-out from one of the rooms for not a great deal more expense.

All in all, the hotel was a real experience, the staff very accommodating and the product itself was generally very good. Given the prices available most of the time, I would highly recommend this hotel.

We booked the Metropole Hotel for our Easter getaway weekend from London after a recommendation from my sister who had stayed at the hotel quite a few years ago. Booking online was easy and checking in on arrival was smooth and courteous. The old fashioned lift was a delight and our room was large, spacious and had what seemed to be a recently renovated bathroom. No compaints at all! Concierge was friendly and helpful with places to eat, breakfast was fantastic (be sure to request a hot chocolate!) and the bars within the hotel and room service cannot be faulted! The only complaint we have was that there was a dog in the room next to ours which barked until late in the evening on our last night there and woke us up early the following morning. No fault of the hotel who they did their best to contact the owner to sort the situation out and I do not hold them responsible for having irresponsible pet owners staying in their hotel! Our complaint was dealt with professionally and with a more than satisfactory outcome.
I would highly recommend this hotel to couples who want somewhere central (few minute walk to Grand Place) and historic to stay. Actually, I would recommend it to anyone!
