Having previously enjoyed staying at the Metrople several years ago, I was looking forward to a romantic weekend with my husband. The hotel is a wonderful old building with a fabulous cafe and located very centrally. Unfortunately the hotel rooms, although recently refurbished, were freezing cold and smelled of dampness and drains. We changed rooms after the first night thinking it was a problem with that particular room but I'm sorry to say we had the same problems with the second one. The whole hotel was cold with the exception of the cafe which they manged to successfully heat. The hotel corridors were tired and shabby, leaving the impression that the owners are unwilling to spend the money to restore it to its former glory. Such a shame. I can no longer recommend this hotel and next time will stay elsewhere.

The review title is intended to be positive not negative. The public areas of the hotel are almost surreal in their architectural and design opulence. A fascinating place to visit and well worth it as a base for a city break in Brussels.
The reception area is elaborate and almost austere, yet the staff are friendly, approachable and helpful.
The cafe bar is worth a visit in itself. Excellent Belgian beers. Highly efficient and experienced staff, who predominantly provide the impression that they have been there nearly as long as the bar itself, exuding an air of wonderful superiority that involves no eye contact and a gentle unease and guilt on the part of the customer for actually being there at all!! Even down to the carefully waxed moustache and the ever so slightly grubby long white aprons, it all provides for a most pleasurable experience.
Very good breakfasts and decent [albeit slightly tired] rooms
Care needed when booking to stay at the hotel as the standard rates are quite high but decent discounts are available through well known web sites. Our booking linked through TripAdvisor

The hotel is clearly stunning with its old and opulent decorations, large and elegant lobbies and - most of all - the atmosphere of the beginning of the XX century. The location is good: very central in BXL (close to the bourse, the grand place, rue neuve, la monnaie etc), although the sourroundings are not the always the nicest. The service is OK and the rooms could be perhaps sligthly improved.

Fantastic old style hotel...beautiful decoration. Situated perfectly to walk into the mall across the main intersection...with all the great shops, restaurants, and chocolate stores!

Rooms were well appointed. The food was excellent (tomato soup was heavenly!!!)...

No complaints at all, and with breakfast included in the deal, it was well priced too.

The design of the hotel lobby, bar and restaurant is breathtaking (it's recommended as a site in many guide books), the rooms are huge by European standards, and the staff is warm and accommodating. It's near everything you want to see in downtown Brussels, has a delicious breakfast in the morning, and a room only costs as much as a smaller room in lesser hotels. A great experience in the Capital of Europe.

Room Tip: Rooms facing the street have a great view, but the big Coca Cola neon sign across the street is pret...
