Owner description: The National Museum of Antiquities is housed in an old monumental building and ‘Begijnhof’. It is the Dutch centre for archaeology. A large part of the collection consists of objects related to ancient Egypt. Unique is the two thousand year old Egyptian temple in the central hall of the museum. Besides ancient Egypt, the museum covers the Middle East, the Classical world and the early history of the Netherlands. The entire collection consists of more than 80,000 objects, including statues of Roman emperors, Etruscan tomb finds and mummies.

The exhibit on Nineveh was spectacular. Also thoroughly enjoyed the video/light projection on the Egyptian monument in the grand entrance hall.

This time the Nineveh exhibition was on and is of the same quality of previous exhibitions we visited from GB. It takes you through Assyrian history with wonderful exhibits and clear explanations in English. You are free to wander through the other parts of the museum with other ancient exhibits. There is a cafeteria to digest all the wonderful things you just experienced.

Very interesting exhibition about the old city of Ninive, the former capital of the Assyrian empire. Lots of reliëfs and statues and a video impression of the old city. There is a permanent exhibition of the ancient Egypt, also very interesting.

I enjoyed admiring the various antiquities from Nineveh;the ruins of a once famous city near present day Mosul;Irak.
Treasures from Nineveh were exported to the British Museum in London and various other museums .Nineveh was probably destroyed by the army of Babylon.
There is a lot of information to take in;but the bookshop has useful literature.

The permanent collection has a large Egyptian collection;acquired by Dutch royals from other collections in the 19th century.
