The ten boom shop and residence above (still operating as a jewelry shop in in the centre of Haarlem. The family hid many Jewish people during the nazi occupation of holland. Unfortunately most of the family were captured and killed, but Corrine ten boom some survived a german concentration camp to become a wonderful peace advocate after the war. If you are in Haarlem it is a must see place. Just a very small donation is all they ask for a compelling and confronting visit to this original house

I am interested in the different ways people respond to tyranny so Corrie ten Boom's house was on my list to visit. Despite the large number of visitors and some room modifications the original layout of the house can still be imagined. Steep twisting stairs and small rooms and her bedroom with part of the wall open so you can see the hiding space brings the living and hiding arrangements to life. Even the small hiding space for documents and the buzzer to warn of visitors add life to some of what the ten Boom family experienced. I visited the Ann Frank House in 1966 before the renovations were made to handle the crowds and this is how I remembered my visit to Ann Frank's House in terms of stepping back to the occupation. Our guide was thorough, interesting, and handled the 15+ visitors with finesse. The recommended donation was 2.5 euros which could have been double or triple that based on what we saw and our guide provided in way of information. It is best to make reservations which we did approximately 2 months in advance.

We were in Amsterdam 2 days before boarding our riverboat cruise. Was so glad we took the short train ride to Haarlem. A nice clean town and safe for pedestrians. The Corrie ten Boom tour was excellent. The guide was incredible. We had actually met Corrie in the early 70s so felt a real connection to this amazing family.

After I was recommended to read 'The Hiding Place' written by Corrie ten Boom, I had the chance to visit the actual house that was used as the hiding place during WW2.
It was an amazing experience to see how this family lived and helped so many Jewish people hide during the war. Is is a true example of caring for others despite the danger to their own safety and I was deeply moved by the visit. It is recommended to book for a visit time. Tours are held in Dutch and in English.

The story of the Ten Booms, motivated by their faith in Jesus Christ, is wonderfully captured in the tour and collection. The structure is small which complicates the tour, but adds to the authenticity. The beautiful and less-tourist-overrun town of Haarlem is a wonderful second benefit of a side trip from crowded Amsterdam to the Ten Boom museum.
