We were in Amsterdam 2 days before boarding our riverboat cruise. Was so glad we took the short train ride to Haarlem. A nice clean town and safe for pedestrians. The Corrie ten Boom tour was excellent. The guide was incredible. We had actually met Corrie in the early 70s so felt a real connection to this amazing family.

After I was recommended to read 'The Hiding Place' written by Corrie ten Boom, I had the chance to visit the actual house that was used as the hiding place during WW2.
It was an amazing experience to see how this family lived and helped so many Jewish people hide during the war. Is is a true example of caring for others despite the danger to their own safety and I was deeply moved by the visit. It is recommended to book for a visit time. Tours are held in Dutch and in English.

The story of the Ten Booms, motivated by their faith in Jesus Christ, is wonderfully captured in the tour and collection. The structure is small which complicates the tour, but adds to the authenticity. The beautiful and less-tourist-overrun town of Haarlem is a wonderful second benefit of a side trip from crowded Amsterdam to the Ten Boom museum.

The museum is small and booking is essential in high season, especially if you want to do the tour in English. There are steep stairs to climb and the rooms are small so the spaces get crowded at some points in the tour. However, the story of Corrie is deeply moving and worth the (temporary) discomfort. The strength of the story is in Corrie's passionate Christian faith and forgiveness and this is explained by the guide. The museum is free but donations are welcome towards the upkeep. Well worth a visit.

We had been booked on a tour in English several days in advance, each tour is limited to 20 and ours was full and there were at least another 20 people who hoped to get in without booking, so make sure you book in advance. Tours are in English or Dutch, so again make sure you are on the right tour. There is no charge. The house was the home of the Ten Boom family who were a Christian family who helped Jews trying to escape the Nazis in the second world war and this tour tells the story of the family and particularly Corrie, who went through the concentration camp system and came out to travel the world telling her story and sharing her faith. Our guide was passionate about telling the story of the house and also in sharing the family's faith, so be prepared to hear that message throughout the tour. It's a good visit for all faiths and none though so don't be put off. Opportunity to buy Corrie's books and a DVD of the film made are at the end of the tour. Genuinely inspiring.
