Though there were no toilets in the hotel rooms, this didn't prove to be a massive problem. The beds were very comfy and the rooms were very warm and clean. The staff were friendly and helpful and the prices in the bar were very reasonable with excellent coffee - even nicer than the coffee shops! It's well situated for exploring the city, especially the red light district and is reasonably priced. I would stay here again if visiiting Amsterdam.

Stayed in Hotel the Crown for three nights (April 2nd - April 5th) 2012. Myself, my wife and two kids (daughter 14 and son 11). I have been to Amsterdam several times over the years but never with kids. So I was slightly worried that we were staying in a budget hotel in the Red Light and normally used by groups of young people. I should not have worried, we had a great time, great location, clean warm room with very comfortable beds, shower and toilet outside the room (both fine). Staff in the hotel bar were brilliant (especially Clay). Cheap drinks (2 euro for soft drinks / small beers). They us play on the pool table for free (Normally one euro). Again can't recommend the staff high enough (made our stay). Take away food outside (Bebo and a great take away on side street outside - great chips and mayonnaise). Bird Cafe behind hotel on Zeedjik. Great few days - the lads even gave us a wake up call on our last morning at 7am to make sure that we didn't miss our train!

Room Tip: Our room had 2 sets of bunk beds and a single bed (5 in total). No view - but only up one fight of...

The Crown was a decent hotel all in all, felt more like a hostel however. Fine if you just want somewhere to crash out for a few hours before hitting the coffeeshops again or other amusements Amsterdam has to offer.

The location is brilliant with coffeeshops and the Red Light District all virtually on the doorstep. The station is a 5 minute walk away as well.

On arrival we were charged an extra 12 euro for the room, which we grudgingly paid. I thought the guy was having a laugh but it's probably in the small print of the booking.

Upon receiving the room key, we were told if we lost it, we would be charged 150 euro, which we found hilarious and had a good laugh about at the reception. How much does it cost to get a key cut ? 4 euros haha, yeah he's definitely having a laugh now. You have to leave the key anyway so it's not really an issue.

The room was clean but could do with a dust round the radiators and a hoover run over it under the beds. The shared toilets were pretty small, in one of them your face is almost touching the door if your sitting on it. The shower was good and we were informed by the cleaner that the hot water was constantly on.

The greatest improvement needed would be a TV in the room. By day 3 we had affectionately named it the "Hell Hole" for a laugh, due to there being nothing to do but sleep whilst being there. There's a TV in the bar downstairs but you really want one in the room for the money your paying.

Overall it was a good experience, ok for a budget hotel.
