I booked Hotel Alexander through TripAdvisor/Booking.com. Process was very easy and hotel owners/managers were very responsive to questions I emailed them ahead of my visit. My room on the third floor had two beds, window facing street, wall-mounted oscillating fan, wall-mounted television, small closet, small desk, and bathroom with shower. Rooms are not elegant but were clean and housekeeping came daily. You can borrow an iron and ironing board from the front desk to care for your clothes.
There is a phone in the room but the hotel also provides you with a loaner mobile phone while you are there. You can call numbers in Europe and the U.S. from the phone so it reduces the need for you to pay extra to your home cell phone company for "roaming" abroad. (Nevertheless, I paid Verizon extra to have service while in Amsterdam). The street was quiet enough that I could sleep with my window open. (It was warm there for October).
Hotel staff are very helpful with directions and advice. Enjoyed chatting with them about Netherlands and Amsterdam. Hotel is very close to Vondelpark and Museumpleine. Was about a 20 to 25 minute walk to Jordaan and central city for my conference.More
