“Animals in the roof and room !!”
Reviewed 14 April 2012

We stayed at The Hem Hotel Amsterdam at the beginning of April 2012. At first we were put in room 400 (the top floor), throughout the first afternoon we could here scratching in the ceiling, we were then woken up at 2.30 am to the sound of an animal moving around in the ceiling, which strangely sounded like a rabbit. We called someone up from reception who promised to change our rooms the next day. We later realised they have wild rabbits around the area so assumed the noise we heard was a rabbit(s) living in the roof.

We then tried to go back to sleep to then be woken up by another scratching noise, to then discover this noise was not in the ceiling but in our room inside the dressing table (between the wall and table), I then saw a mouse through a cable hole in the table!

We got into our second room at 2 o'clock the next day (you are not allowed into your room before this time under any circumstances). This room was fine, we didn't hear anymore noises, it was clean and tidy, despite looking out onto the motorway it was surprisingly quiet.

We found most of the staff to be polite and helpful. The hotel is in a residential area which we had read many complaints about prior to staying there, however we didn't have any issues. The hotel is a short tram ride away from the city and other restaurants and attractions.

Due to our experience in the first room we would not advise anyone to eat in the hotel as we don't know whether they have a problem with mice and other animals.

Overall the hotel is very basic and good value for money, ideal if you are going to Amsterdam for a short break and just need somewhere to sleep.

Room Tip: DO NOT stay on the 4th floor (top floor)!!!

We were 2 couples staying 4 nights the weekend before easter. We wanted to spend as little as possible on the hotel, but still have some comforts. We got a really good rate, and to be honest, didn't expect too much. The staff was helpfull and friendly troughout the stay. The beds a bit torn and worn, but very good. And the rooms were in general quiet, no traffic/city noise. But, next door was 2 inches from our door, and the noise from the inhabitants coming/talking/leaving were bad.Especially the creaking door. Every time they opened the door it sounded as our door creaked open, quite annoying when you're in bed... The rooms were otherwise clean and ok.

We stayed here with a group of friends over the easter weekend. Got a very good rate on the hotel website (it was much more expensive at other websites) for two quad rooms.

It is a budget hotel, and we were not expecting too much, but were pelasantly surprised. The hotel is a little bit run-down, but it felt like there was some refurbishing in process. It is quite a distance from the city centre but there is a tram and night-bus stop 200 m from the hotel, from where it is a 15 min ride to the centre.

Check-in was a bit chaotic as there was no-one at the front desk, but we eventually got the room keys - though only one key per room and we were told it wasn't possible to get more. A bit of a disappointment as we were 4 persons in one room.

The room was very much like shown at the hotel website. Furnishings were new, but the floor and the roof did show their age, which did affect the general impression of the place. There was more than enough space for all of us and luggage. Bathroom was ok, but the drain in the shower didn't work properly so the floor was flooded every time someone had a shower. Also, we ran out of soap the first night without it being refilled by the cleaners. Good beds - we slept very well.

Can't comment on the breakfast buffet as we only had "breakfast to go," which, for 3,75 €, was a very good deal for a small baguette with ham and cheese, croissant & jam, egg and coffee/tea/juice.

Conclusion: A good choice if you are going to Amsterdam on a budget and need a comfortable and basic hotel for a low cost.

Room Tip: If you are there during the summer, ask for an air-conditioned room as not all of the rooms have it.
