Owner description: Tucked away just off Spui, this delightful collection of houses arranged around an open court is well worth searching out.

Built originally as a home for Catholic nuns, this enclosed garden and courtyard includes many building surrounding the lush green gardens. It is in the area of the Spui, which is also a tram stop. The enclosed area was meant to give security and be noise free from the outside streets. Today it still houses single woman. It has a strict visitors policy, like no men overnight, etc. You can walk thru the gardens and admire the beauty and serenity but you are requested to respect their privacy also. No fee to enter. Walk thru in less than an hour.

You will not just stumble across the Begijnhof. It is a small courtyard or part that is really accessible to the houses around it. You can gain entry via a small passageway that cuts though the surrounding buildings.

There is a small church also in the courtyard, but it was not open to the public. One claim to fame of this area is that the oldest building in Amsterdam is here. Truly the architecture of Amsterdam is unique and here you can see it close up without all of the noise and bustle of the open streets.

A little quiet oasis in the heart of Amsterdam, once in the grounds it’s hard to believe Kalverstraat & Rokin are just a stones throw away. Due to lack of time did not spent enough time in the area & missed the wooden house, next time we will give it more.

You're floundering in a steady stream of pedestrians and bikes in a busy part of central Amsterdam, and then....you walk through an archway into another world. It is a medieval courtyard -- grassed and paved -- and surrounded by tall houses, two churches and a lot of history. Don't miss it.

Worth a short stop when shopping or visiting the centre of Amsterdam. Jst pop in and out to feel the atmosphere. The part you can visit is very small as parts are reserved for residents. Not easy to find as only one entrance from Spui
