We stayed here as extension to our Viking River cruise on the Rhine River. Hotel was a short van ride from the ship. It is neat, clean and has a very nice restaurant. We arrived at 9:30 AM and, of course, the room was not ready. Once we got to the room it was spacious and well appointed.
So, why only 3 stars. First, other than allowing folks to check their luggage with the Concierge, there were no provisions for several dozen people showing up in the morning. Given that Viking does this on a weekly if not daily basis, I expected at least a conference room or some place set aside for people to check email, maybe get some water and light refreshments. Nada. We were left to fend for ourselves with only directions to the toilets and free maps of the city which I considered a strong hint to not hang around the lobby too long. I've been in the same situation in other places with other cruise lines and hotel chains and we were treated as valued guests not as a problem so the short shift here was unexpected.
Second, the room's bathroom is dangerous. The shower is in the tub, not unusual, but the lip of the tub is 2.5 ft high making getting into and out of the shower an exercise in low hurdles. Plus there are no safety bars to grab onto to steady one's self while doing so. AND the tub bottom is not non-skid so it gets very slippery when wet and soapy. Together, these conditions present a serious slip/fall hazard, especially for the age range of the typical Viking passenger. I realize this isn't uncommon in Europe but considering it's an American Hotel chain and that Viking caters to an almost exclusively American clientele, I was expecting a bathroom that meets 21st Century safety standards.
My summation is that the only reason to stay here is because it comes with the Viking extension package. If you have a choice, consider other options.
