Owner description: This area in the oldest part of Amsterdam is known for the red neon windows that display barely-dressed prostitutes advertising their services; it's all perfectly acceptable as long as it stays inside this designated area of the city.

“When in Rome”
Reviewed 28 November 2011

Visited the Red Light District on a Saturday evening, had a great time, went to a few bars then onto a show. What a laugh! We felt safe at all times, it is not a dodgy area, quite the opposite. Lots of people, even families just milling about enjoying the atmosphere.

“Cool place to hang out”
Reviewed 28 November 2011

The "Red lights" district is not what you might think... it is actualy a lively and well lit area with only a small part dedicated to "Red lights" action...
The other parts of the district are buzzing with activity, with nice eateries and pubs, and coffee shops. Great for a night out.

“red light district, myths & reality”
Reviewed 21 November 2011

The red light district in Amsterdam is about the size of 4 by 2 city blocks located just a few blocks from Danmark & the central station.
It is a lively area with many "red light Windows " just as you may have heard. Beautiful women offering themselves to customers in full view glass doors . What I've seen is that probably 90% of visitors in this area are just visiting and not customers. The area is also filled with restaurants & bars. Where else can you sit down and enjoy an excellent Italian diner next to a red light door? Really, the are as nice places to eat and have a drink. People, families live throughput the district.living normal middle to upper class lives.
As far as safety is concerned. If you are not looking for trouble you won't find it , just keep an eye on your wallet like you would in any city. Really , 9 o'clock at night and there are huge groups of people being lead by tour guides through the district. If you do want to check it out I really do suggest nighttime as the area does not come alive until dusk.
Where else do you find prostitutes, sex shops, restaurants, churches and artists as well as residesnts all coinciding all within a 100 feet of one another? It really is a unique place and a must see.
Note I have not posted pictures of the area , it is perfectly ok to take pictures in the area , just not of the girls, this is not allowed and I do not suggest testing this rule as you may find yourself with a broken camera.

“Curious, but nothing special”
Reviewed 19 November 2011

- A lot of people, sometimes annoying.
- Beautiful girls, but seems much more a touristic "vitrine"
