Best location and best hotel in Amsterdam. We travel to Amsterdam every year and we just found our new home away from home-we will only stay here from now on! Try the suite with your own private entrance-its pure luxury

Room Tip: suite 713 it has your own entrance onto the street

We arrived at The Sofitel for a 6 night stay! Hotel room overlooking the canals was lovely, well equipped! First night was a bit strange to say the least...after going to the Bistro for dinner we could not find anything healthy on the menu, so the waitress brought us the menu from bridges restaurant fine dining! $25EU for the smallest plate of vegetarian kohlrabi- we didn't go to The Bistro to have fine dining! Breakfast were really good every day! We never had lunch or dinner in the hotel again as selection was very poor!
Staff were friendly and professional
On the 2nd last day we noticed we had $468Au withdrawn from our credit card and the next day another $699au deducted! We went to reception as we thought our account had been hacked!! (We had fully paid our accommodation prior to arriving) we were told after quite a delay that both amounts were deducted - well not deducted but held in case we spent more around the hotel!! If a hotel is going to take $'s from your credit card. It would only be polite to say....we are holding $'s x amount for incidentals!!
All else around the hotel was lovely!
If we went back to Amsterdam we would stay again at The Sofitel was the best hotel in the city centre, but we would know what to expect!
There are many many healthy eateries for vegetarians very close! There was one night that we fancied staying in and thought we would order room service. Nothing on the list that suited us! We thought a vegetarian pizza without cheese..but the pizzas were 'packet pizza' already made up....5 star hotel?
Lots of fantastic things to do! Even bike riding amongst the locals! Great museums!

Room Tip: Rooms overlooking canals noisy at night! We don't like air conditioning so left window open! Close windows ok!

You go to The Grand Amsterdam because it is located in the heart of Amsterdam, you want great service and you can appreciate some history. Upon asking the concierge we were given a brief tour of the building where we were inform of the buildings vast history going back to the 13 or 14 century. Like most historic building, it wasn't originally built as a hotel. I believe the Sofitel was originally a convent, or two convents. So yes, its layout is choppy and the rooms tend to be bit smaller. But I don't think it would be possible to take a centuries old building and make it anything other than the georgous creation that it is. The people there were incredibly friendly. They helped us book restaurants, tours a river tour. They were just amazing. The hotel is in a great location center to much of what people want to see in Amsterdam. Amsterdam is an extremely vibrant city. People come here to have fun. So if you are concerned about noise, request the highest floor possible. We were there for 2 days which is never enough time. But we will be back and we will go back to the Grand Amsterdam.

Dear guest,

It is a pleasure to read your lovely review and your words are very encouraging for the entire team, thank you ! It is indeed due to the historical nature of our buildings that all rooms slightly differ in size and design...but that makes our hotel so special.
With regards to the history, we offer a daily historical tour of the hotel for in-house guests, telling you all about the history and more...

We hope to welcome you back to Sofitel Legend The Grand Amsterdam soon.

Am not sure how they got the 'Legend' tag as they are not much better than other Sofitel's. The rooms are nice but not great (we had a pillar in the middle of ours) and the bathrooms whilst modern are oddly designed and not overly practical i.e. shallow long basin which cannot be filled with water. The staff are friendly and the facilities nice but we felt like second class citizens at breakfast when the manager seated us and explained nothing (we had to ask for a menu and order our own coffee). Yet the table beside us got everything explained and order taken immediately!

As a Platinum member, without me knowing, I was entitled to the butler service - but they didn't tell us about this until 24 hours after we arrived! After 26 hours of flying halfway around the world we were given a room above the bar - very noisy and not great for trying to get some rest. No room upgrade was available (have not had one with the last 3 Sofitel's in the last month we have stayed in - the loyalty programme seems pointless). One day they didn't service our room until I phoned at 4pm, but then apparently they did the turn down service at 5pm so when we got back at 9pm it did not look like anything had been done i.e. the lights were off and the curtains open - bizarre! Another night the turn down service was also forgotten and getting a newspaper only happened 50% of the time.

They did provide some extras to make up for their errors but the errors and issues should not be occurring in the first place!

Dear guest,

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. While I wish you had a better experience, it is feedback like this that we learn from and use to improve. We work hard to deliver an exceptional guest experience, and it's apparent in this case that we fell short.

If you give us a chance to earn back your trust, I can assure you that we will do our best to give you the great hotel experience that so many of our guests have grown so fond of.

I hope to welcome you back in The Grand in the future.
