Huge, 7 floored library right in Central Amsterdam, a quick walk from the Cetraal Station. It has a huge collection, a kids floor and LaPlace restaurant on top (7th) floor. The view from restaurant is just too good. Perfect place to look at Ij, ships, city and read a book or listen to music. It also has a hall on 7th floor. There are elevators, escalators & is wheelchair friendly. They also publish a paper to share updates. Renovation is in progress these days.

Amsterdam tourist guides and brochures never mention this wonderful place: the public library of Amsterdam. Located a few minutes from Amsterdam Centrum, this Library is a true oasis. It is a modern building, with 5 or 6 incredibly cozy, roomy, and inviting floors devoted to books and media in different subjects. The main floor (entrance) is a wonderful space especially designed for kids, with bookshelves designed in circular manner, so that children feel inside small homes with walls full of books. I personally loved the piano placed in the main floor, available for anyone to play, as long you are able to make music, not noise. I took advantage of it and I spent about 20 minutes playing a few pieces by Claude Bowling, Chopin, and Yann Tiersen. It was a fantastic experience to be able to play a piano within such a woderful library! I also explored several floors and noticed a complete floor devoted to music, that houses thousands of music scores, as well as silent pianos (pianos with headphones), shoes of dancers, and other items, not just books and sheet music. Finally, I took the scalator to the upper level and felt envious of the readers who quietly read or simply meditate in front of the large windows that give you access to dream-like sights of the channels and streets of Amsterdam. I could not avoid to have a sit and enjoy myself such a wonderful time, observing other readers, staring in amazement towards the city, and taking photographs. In short, visiting Amsterdam Public Library (for free!) is a much better attraction than wasting your time and your enrgies among the masses that suffocate you in the more touristic areas of the city.

My wife and I visited here and were very impressed by the building, the layout and everything that was available
to the public.
On the seventh floor they also have a most wonderful restaurant with an outside terrace which has fantastic views over the city.

It is almost undescribable - the modern arhitectural style and almost sacral yet pleasant atmosphere which anyone can sense in this rich library. I was astonished, thinking, that any city should have a book sanctuary like this.!
