Mercure Groningen Martiniplaza
Ranked #8 of 18 Hotels in Groningen
Reviewed 7 May 2012

I stayed at the Mercure hotel for one night. It was pretty ok, a standard Mercure hotel. The room was a bit too small in my opinion but it was nicely decorated. Everything was very clean. It is located a bit outside the center though, you either have to drive or to take the bus. Nice staff. City tax of 3.5 per night per person is a bit too much for a city like Groningen though, especially if you pay some 60 euros for the room for 2 persons and then still have to pay 7 euros extra just for one night! Parking is available at an extra charge, as everything in the Netherlands…
Also charging some 16 euros for breakfast on a mercure hotel is a little but to much I think.
So overall it is a nice hotel but with a lot of hidden extra charges.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for your feedback about your stay in the Mercure Groningen Martiniplaza. As you probably understand the city tax is a fix amount (4 star hotel) set by the municipality of Groningen.

We hope to be able to welcome you back soon.

Kind regards
Rick Haandrikman
General manager

The standard room is not large but big enough.Bed large so great for my length and very comfortable.Staff friendly and helpful.Breakfast excellent-everything fresh, nothing left out too long to get hard or curled. One of the two lifts was out of order [stairs only to the 3rd floor]and as we were above the 3rd floor this was a disaster, twice it took us more than 30 minutes to get in the lift, unfortunately the emergency doors on our floor was also out of order so we could also not use those stairs! - informed reception and they would fix it because of course this exit should be able to open at all times.bus nearby but taxi easy to get.Bathroom clean and spacious. Information about room service in two brochures, but with different information about opening time. We could not get in touch with room service even though they were supposed to be open. But still, minor points compared to quality of room and service which was good overall.

The mecure brand fits itself comfortably into the environment in which they work. I have stayed in some dire ones (Marseilles) and some very good ones (Dubai)
Here in Groningen they have struck a good compromise. Good location, friendly staff. The standard rooms are a trifle on the small side and the views are never going to win prizes. On the whole, very comfortable
Pity about the complete no-smoking policy but that is about standard for Europe these days.
