Center Parcs Parc Sandur
Reviewed 18 February 2017

Ok, so, there we were deciding which European CentreParcs to visit when the missus spotted the double jacuzzi bath on the pic and Sandur it was! As old hands to the holiday park game, we knew to expect the unexpected, and that's what we got!
People say 'Its not a CentreParcs', and it's not (in the usual sense).. It flies the flag has the sign and the logo appears on the monitors every now and again but that's it. If you treat it as the privateer Parc Sandur it was until 2012 then you'll be in the right area. It's actually a suburb of Emmen, the right-hand side as you drive in is a familiar looking housing estate (bizarrely based upon English new towns like Welwyn and Milton Keynes so it's actually quite odd to see British outline 1970s style chalet bungalows lined up) and the left is the holiday parc. You park up in the tiny car park sign in and drive to your villa... And that is the same all week, parking is outside your villa!
Villas themselves are pretty standard Dutch detached houses all of which back onto water (caution with young kids) and are pleasant, immaculate and well appointed. Notable by their absence are the myriad fir trees leading to a light and airy ambience.
The plaza is again the original 1998 built Parc Sandur centrum which has an extensive supermarket, 4 restaurants, bowling, a small pool (but we lost hours in there, it has an atmosphere that makes you want to stay). The whole thing is staffed by a skeleton crew (it appeared) so the Lord only knows how they'd cope with a rush but they are friendly and helpful.
Soooo, plus-es it's small and compact so easily navigable, immaculate (like 'eat yer dinner off' immaculate) close to Emmen, Groeningen, and the German border, easily reachable and peaceful. If you want serene and relaxing, this does it in spades. Possibly not the place for older kids.
Minus-es? Well, as above.. it's not what you're used to, REALLY quiet, apparently understaffed, no-one seems to use the plaza very much, they have about 30 hire bikes all up (but the electric assisted ones rock!) The villa we had had no fireplace, no idea if they're all like that but that's a major draw for us. We assume they sell logs and lighters for the Chiminea thing on the patio which is a bit pointless when it's minus 4! They really might've said the main restaurant and bowling alley were closed for refurbishment as well.
Oh, and don't forget your Towels, no towels are provided!

But, if you treat it as a guest cottage in a quiet corner of Drenthe you'll be fine, but if you're expecting Elveden... It's not that...

Room Tip: All pretty much the same, we struggled to find much difference between comfort and VIP

We just arrived at the resort and finished unpacking etc. We even made beds, which I found odd that we had to make beds especially that you have to pay for bedding. Suddenly one of the family members asked if anyone saw where the towels were. We went and looked all over and couldn't find any at all. I went to reception to ask about towels and was told that we had to rent them or bring our own. Goodness me I have never seen anywhere in the world where I stayed that you didn't get any towels, but have to rent them. We have paid prime rates as it falls over Christmas and New Years and would have expected this for the price we were charged. Also there is no broom or bucket or mop or tea towels and no bbq either. All which I have had as standard at other resorts and is not included here. Other thing is that our dishwasher has one wheel missing and so the top tray is hanging at an angle when pulled out and could break the dishes should it somehow tilt a bit more. Our coffee pot also has a major crack through the pot which means you can not even use it either. All in all I would rather book into a guest house next time as we get more there for our money than what we got from centre parcs. The pool area is not even that great either. We visit Holland 4 times a year and thought we would try this resort so all amenities is at our door step, but what we paid against what we got is not nearly as good as staying in the guest house and taking the kids for a day or 2 to the local pool areas. Even reception close down over night, which is fine, but you would at least think that there is a place we could hand the keys in when we left early the morning. We ended up sliding it under the door as no post box or so was available.

What a great location to spend a break, we stayed in a premium cottage opposite an inlet very close to the main lake, it was idylic. Although not an original Centre Parc, it was accuired from Gran Dorado for a three star it was ideal, it was peaceful, picturesque and a bargain. We paid £640 for two adults & a 15 year old for 4 nights in a premium cottage with flights & car hire, compared to the cheapest one we could find in the UK which was windfell in te lakes for £1100 for a comfort cottage it was a no brainer. The pool and facilities were not as good as the original centre parcs and we have visited 4 in Holland, it had all round wifi which is great for teenager's, it is the nicest and most picturesque. There were a couple of down sides which were a slight inconvenience but not enough to spoil the holiday. The cottage had ants both inside and on the patio and although they tried to deal with it they still came. They are upgrading the main complex inside around the restaurants and reception area and had builders in during the day, I feel this work could have been done during the night or after hours. The supermarket in the centre was very good and same price as those outside which is unusual for a centre parcs.
We visited the local town of Emmen which had a wide variety of shops and eating places and also visited a transit concentration camp which housed Jewish people before been sent to there death at auswitz and Belsan, the museum was very good and it is a moving insight in to what the poor people suffered, over 102,000 were sent from the camp, it is 27 miles from parc sandur and we'll worth the visit.
The parc is two hours by car from Amsterdam but a nice drive as holland is a very pleasant country to visit. A bonus for us was the weather which was excellent and the tan unexpected. All in all a very enjoyable holiday.

Spent 4 nights at Parc Sandur from 15-19 Feb 16. Wasn't expecting too much as the reviews hadn't been that great. However it was just what we needed. The Parc was virtually empty due to it not being school holidays in the Netherlands and we had free run of the pool and facilities. Our children (2 & 5) had a great time. The accommodation was much nicer than the average centreparcs comfort cottage and the scenery was spectacular. We visited plopsaland for the day which is highly recommended for rainy days. All in all a great place to stay with friendly and accommodating staff. We are very likely to make a return trip as it is such great value for money.

Very nice site with lots of underused facilities. The Bars and Restaurants were mainly empty during our stay, as was the 8 lane Bowling Alley we found on the last night. The Chalets are a bit tired looking and in need of a makeover, basic beds and no bedding included, although bedding and towels can be hired on site at an extra, 17euro for 3 towels. Free low quality Wifi.
