It was an exciting experience, even if i visited it alone and i thought i would be bored to tears, it was a very well organized, very modern museum. I'd visit again

“Very comprehensive”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 April 2012

The Swiss National Museum really tells the story of Switzerland becoming a nation. The section focusing specifically on the national history is full of interesting details presented in a logical and persuasive way. As a consequence of of visit, we had to surf the internet for further info, which is a good sign of impact.
Only negative point was that the entrance fee had to be paid in cash (in Zurich, Switzerland in 2012...).

“Good to visit on a rainy or cold day.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 31 March 2012

The Landesmuseum is definitely worth a visit. But if your time n Zürich is limited consider to first explore the old town, Niederdorf and the lakeside, especially if it's warm and sunny.

If you are keen to learn about Switzerland's history, century long migration (in and out), the famous Swiss independence, the role of Switzerland in the two world wars. the direct democracy, etc.... the you should visit even on a sunny day.
Also come to the Landesmuseum if you like to see how traditional Swiss upper class homes and social gathering rooms look. There are loads of old weapons, artefacts and art there too.

All exhibits have detailed explanations in the 4 national languages, for English you need to take the translation cards that are provided in each section.

What I was missing was a section about traditional Swiss clothing. I might have missed it, but doubt there was one besides a small section on uniforms of the Swiss army.

The Swiss furniture section failed to impress and can easily be skipped.

Probably the most stunning feature of the Landesmuseum is the large and beautiful museum building with the huge central court, right in the middle of one of the most expensive cities in the world.

“Pleasantly Surprised!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 March 2012

The National Museum is every thing Swiss!! It traces the history of Switzerland from Roman times to modern day. It covers settlement and governance, immigration and emigration, inventions and industry, politics, banking, furniture, historic rooms, religion, and fashion. It is easy to spend 2-3 hours here. Currently there is an exhibit on Swiss Press Photography since 1940.
