Our primary reason for our trip to Zermatt was for me to climb the Matterhorn ( I was going to climb it in 1974 but the weather didn't cooperate) It was time to settle an old score. We could have wasted our money on some of the other hotels which are more than happy to take your spare change, we would rather spend it on good food, wine beer, etc. Personally we prefer quite cozy older places. It is not one of the large big bucks hotels but you won't find a more wonderful staff. The owner and his wife treat you like family(as do the staff). When I first arrived they helped me contact my guide for the Matterhorn climb (I hadn't quite figured out the phone system, I like to blame it on the lack of sleep!).Throughout our stay they were extremely helpful with any of our request.

We had a perfect veiw of the Matterhorn from our room. Although the rooms were a bit on the snug side they were clean and more than adequate. We were there to enjoy the beauty of the mountains, not to watch tv or spend time on computers. That's what we were trying to get away from.
I had sent some of my climbing gear to the hotel ahead of time so I wouldn't have to lug it aroud the airports and possibly have the airlines lose it . When it came time to leave I asked what was the best way to send it home and they just said that they would take care of it. All of the climbing gear arrived home safe and sound (we still had more traveling to do). The Hotel Alfa and the staff were definitely part of what made our trip to Zermatt memorable. We are going back again this fall.
PS.I had a great climb with a great guide

We were late booking considering it was mid summer, dependant on the health of a 93-year-old and without a huge budget, so the Alfa was something of a nailbiting choice. We did check it was accessible for a wheelchair. It was - almost! We tried the path to the street but it had the worst paving I have ever encountered we resolved not to use it again. The other access was via the cellar/ ski room and involved a couple of steps, but it was manageable.

The hotel looked like a first attempt, very quaint and Swiss from the outside but cramped and dated inside. The management now also owns a much swankier hotel next door, and this helps raise the overall standard because that is where the extremely good inclusive breakfast is taken and it also houses the (also inclusive) health and fitness centre which sadly we didn't have time to try, being there only one night. In some respects the quiet classiness of the other hotel serves only to point up the deficiencies of the tired old Alfa, but on the other hand the price of the Alfa was exceptionally competitive - for Zermatt, that is!

The rooms in the Alfa are rather small and definitely in need of a refurb. One of the two was also somewhat smoky and needed airing; Switzerland, we noted more than once, has some catching up to do in non-smoking provision. But the views of the Mattherhorn from the balcony are stunning, and I can't remember ever having a better panorama to wake up to.

The staff were without exception friendly and helpful. They showed genuine concern when the older member of the party felt ill late in the evening (possibly brought on by the altitude).

We were met from the Glacier Express at the station, though bear in mind that this is really a taxi service, not a free transfer. The hotel is perhaps an eight minute walk from the station more or less on the level - but this entrance is the badly made and hard to find path opposite the sports ground. The other entrance is from down by the river and is much more of a hike from the station, not to mention a dangerous one - the electric vehicle drivers in Zermatt take no prisoners!

If dated decor really bothers then go elsewhere. I didn't find the bed uncomfortable at all, but after a glorious day on the train I was ready to sleep on anything. If all you want is a friendly and clean (smoky room apart) place to stay with a stunning view and access to good facilities next door, then the Alfa may well fit the bill. Then you can pocket the difference in price, upgrade to First Class plus meal on the Glacier Express (as we did) and have the rail trip of a lifetime.

This hotel was very dated, with pea green decor in the rooms. The bed was very, very hard - being 5 months pregnant, this wasn't a great feature. The receptionist was very friendly and welcoming, though one of the workers barged in on our room one morning without even knocking. The breakfast was held next door at the 4-star hotel and was pleasant, but there was no cooked food (i.e. eggs, bacon, etc) only cold cuts, cereals, and sweets. The attendant in the dining hall there was very sweet and spoke many languages. Our room was warm enough for the time of year, we had plenty of hot water for showers, and the location was only a five-minute walk from the main street. Also, the hotel offers a shuttle service (via electric car) to the hotel - even though it's only 7 minutes walking from the train station, it's nice to have when you've got luggage.

Our view of the Matterhorn was perfect - that was the best feature of our stay at Hotel Alfa.

Booked the day before, during an independent tour week of Switzerland, this was by far the cheapest room during my stay and has been judged on value for money.

Very pleasant service from all at the hotel. The lady owner is charming, and absolutely everyone else had a smile and greeting at hand, be it at the bar or serving breakfast.

Breakfast buffet was very well presented in the next door Hotel Metropol, in a beautiful room with clear views of the Matterhorn.

Very cosy bar in Hotel Alfa itself, as pictured, and quiet alcove for free internet access next to the bar.

Travelling alone this time, the room provided to me was the smallest I have ever stayed in: two steps and you were across it. A sink in the room and the bathroom convenient enough just a few steps down the hall. A small wall mounted TV. View to the rear of the bulding, overlooking other chalet type hotels but pleasant enough. Please bear in mind that this was a budget room and the hotel brochure suggests that far more spacious and comfortable rooms are available.

The hotel is a 10 minute walk from the train station, but only if happen to know where you are going, If you have heavy bags a lift in an electric taxi is advisable. I had walked, and found the local tourist office map tiny to read and hard to follow, so spent a good while lugging my bag around the streets to find the hotel. As a hopefully helpful tip, it is located between the river and the artifical sports pitches, which are around a third of the way up the main street, on the left, walking from the station square.

The appeal of Zermatt is apparent the second you walk out of the door and, as a budget means of staying there, Hotel Alfa has something to offer because of its friendliness and good service.
