“Brilliant but let down by petty details”
Reviewed 17 June 2012

Loved the hotel no problems with meal portions, unless you are used to eating too much! the hosts were lovely people and it is just wonderful...but. We felt that with the costs of the rooms somethings out to be included, for example the hotel charged us over £70 for using the hotels transfer bus to and from the railway station, this really out to have been included in the cost of the stay, it just makes them look like they are money grabbing. We also found that at around £16 for a gin and tonic the hotel had driven it guests to their rooms after the evening meals. We spend a lot of time in swiss hotels and this hotel charges so much for drinks that after the evening meal most guests went to bed leaving the bar area without much atmosphere. This is a real shame. I am sure if they reduced the bar prices by 40% and increased the room prices by 10% and included the costs of transfers the experience for customers would have been better.

We are in two minds as to whether to go back, on the one had we loved the hotel but everyone hates being ripped off and to have a couple of drinks after a meal is going to add £64 to your bill so you don't enjoy the drink or you don't drink. It saddens me because anyone who stays in this hotel can afford the drinks but these prices remove the enjoyment from doing so.

So my message to the proprietors to increase your room prices and reduce your incidentals costs and you guests will likely spend just as much but will have a much more enjoyable time in doing so.

Lastly, this hotel provides both a mixed sauna area and a women only area. The result is unlike many other swiss hotels, one of segregation. My wife and I enjoy using these spa areas together and because she was one of the few women in the moved area did not feel as relaxed as in other hotels. In effect the segregated area rather spoilt it for us, I ann sure that other women have had a similar experiance.

Our second visit to this wonderful hotel located just outside the town of St Moritz. Nothing is too much bother for the staff and we received great service from check in to check out. The concierge, the ski room chaps, ski school, the waiters (and occassional waitress) could not have been more friendly and helpful. Helen and Vic Jacobs run the hotel and were a presence throughout our stay, welcoming us on arrival and waving us off - they appear to do this for everyone and it is impressive.

The hotel offers a high level of comfort with large rooms. As examples of the extraordinary level of detail, there is a night light in the bathroom (for those 3am trips) and doors have quiet latches so beloved husband not woken on said trips. And joy of joys there is too much cupboard space, we took 80kg of luggage and there was still cupboard space. Bathrooms have been comprehensively tested and work really well.

Every accomodation is made for skiers comfort and this really is a great skiers' hotel. Ski shop and ski school on tap and a two minute walk to the drag lift that takes you up the first chair lift. You can walk to your room in your ski boots, but heck why bother. The hotel has just opened a new ski room. It is very roomy and accomodates the morning hordes putting on boots. The new boot room has brought to an end the days when you could just leave the skis in a heap outside, but the new room is worth it. We skied with Rudi from the ski school and he could not have been more perfect for us. He has worked at Suvretta for 50 years this year, still races, but uses his energy, wisdom and great sense of humour to great effect wtih his clients.

We made quite a few [slightly odd] requests of the Concierge desk. They were unfailingly helpful, with a great knowldedge of the locality and organised things in an instant. I would particularly recommend a trip to Sils and then taking a horse and sleigh ride to Fex. We walked back to Sils. A wonderful morning out, fabulous low energy walk and a real experience of being in Heidi country.

The hotel has a magnificent swimming pool, jacuzzi and steam room complex. We have visited many such places and this really does get our top award. Sitting in the outside jacuzzi surrounded by snow, watching the skaters with the snowy mountains behind is a fabulous memory. As is being tucked up on the terrace with a blanket and hot chocolate.

So do I have any complaints? No. I would however caution that the portions in the main restaurant really are on the small side even for those of us to the East of the Atlantic. Portions have shrunk since our last visit. Also if you HAVE to have a double bed - they don't have any. The expert team of chamber maids do an excellent job of joining two single beds but that may not work for you. I should note that the chamber maids are the most professional I have come across, Needless to say a first class job on cleaning and have never disturbed us whilst we were in our room. They clearly have some system of watching who is coming and going. Very impressive.

In conclusion, this was for us a very expensive holiday but offered wonderful value and I can't recommend more strongly.

Room Tip: Rooms on the south side offer a marvellous view of the lakes, probably best to avoid the north view...

This is true five star hotel set in a magnificent location well outside St. Moritz. The views of the mountains, lakes and woods are wonderful. The atmosphere is reminiscent of a grand hotel from a 30s film. Yes, they do have rules about jackets and ties etc. that some reviewers have bridled at but I think it adds to a sense of old-fasioned elegance that the hotel is seeking to maintain. Rooms are large and comfortable with excellent bathrooms. The food is of a high standard with a particularly good breakfast buffet. The staff are polite and efficient although not all of them have a perfect command of English. The only drawback is that it is all very expensive given the strength of the Swiss franc.

St Moritz over the Christmas Holidays has long been a meeting ground of the super rich. This is where the twin concepts of tasteful vulgarity and understated ostentation were first developed. If one happens to be hit by a car on the crowded streets of thew village one at least has the consolation of knowing that one has been run over by a Lamborghini. The prices at the leading hotels have risen into the stratosphere (the glitterati tend to stay mostly at the Palace). Sour apples perhaps, but it's not for me. However, in the low season (the second half of January in winter and June and September in summer) it's still possible to get some impression of what St Moritz was originally about, namely spending a quiet few days in the midst of a truly stunningly beautiful mountainous countryside while enjoying all the creature comforts. My favourite hotel by far is the Suvretta House. One of the five five star establishments that the village can boast of, it's located well outside of town, surrounded by woods. While the outside has not shaken off the assertive monumentality of pre World War I hotel architecture, on the inside everything reflects luxury and good taste, two qualities that are not always conjoined. Everything conducive to an extended stay is provided, there is a huge indoor pool, a spa, tennis courts, the ski slopes are but a short walk fom the front door, there are well maintained hiking paths leading in all directions. My favorite is the one leading down to the lake in the village and then, through the woods to Pontresina, whence one returns by train, altogether a half day's trek. More serious climbing is also available several twelve thousand foot peaks may be ascended with a day's climb. Indoors a small orchestra plays dance music both at the tea hour and in the evenings. The food in the restaurant is at the high end of grand hotel cookery, somewhere between one and two star Michelin rating. If you're bored here you have only yourself to blame. The downside is that, even in low season half pension (breakfast and dinner) in a decently sized room will cost you around 1,200 Swiss Francs a day for a couple. If this lies within your means (they lost me some time ago) this is one of the most pleasant means of spending a week or two that I can think of.

We recently returned from our honeymoon in Italy and Switzerland. Our stay at The Suvretta House was the absolute highlight of our trip. I cannot recommend the hotel highly enough.
To begin, we received a warm personal welcome both from the staff and the directors of the hotel. Our room was impeccably clean and beautiful, with an amazing view of the mountains and lakes. The amenities were 5 star. It was so peaceful and relaxing.
The indoor pool and outdoor jacuzzi were stunning.
The highlight of the stay were the meals. The best food ever. The most professional presentation as well.
Dinner is fairly formal, and the staff puts on a well-orchestrated show, nightly, preparing and presenting 5-course meals. One night, I wanted something off the menu (Wiener Schnitzel with noodles), and the chef whipped it right up for me.
The lounge named Anton's Bar had a wonderful duet playing, and we enjoyed cocktails and dancing before dinner.
Breakfast is another spectacular show at the Suvretta House. The buffet spread is breathtaking, both visually and taste-wise. They also cooked me fried eggs, apart from the buffet.
On Wednesday, the Hotel Directors hosted a "picnic" near Pontresina, open to all hotel guests at no additional cost. This was the most fabulous picnic I have ever been to, next to this incredible mountain stream, that we reached after a bus ride and a short hike. They served beef, lamb, risotto cooked in a cauldron, salads cheeses, desserts, etc etc, all served with wine. It was absolutely amazing.
My new bride and I love this hotel, and our only regret was that we could not stay longer.
I gave the hotel 5 stars for "value", becuase while it is very expensive, it is very well worth it.
Thank you Mr and Mrs Jacob for an amazing vacation!
