“Decent hotel in Chur”
Reviewed 8 June 2012

This hotel is located very close to the train station, in the Alstaad. It is old and one floor up of stairs from the street level. It is a bit outdated with tired decor. The room itself was comfortable with a nice size bed and bathroom. I showed that it had been recently renovated. We found the double sink in the bedroom a bit peculiar but aside from that the room was fine. Wi Fi alive.
The buffet breakfast was fine and allowed us to make nice sandwiches that we took with us to the Glacier Express.

If you don't mind climbing a flight of stairs to the entrance, you will find very helpful reception and a clean and comfortable room with WiFi and a great hot shower. I believe it is the oldest hotel in Chur which is the oldest city in Switzerland. The adjacent restaurant was charming and the portions were huge and delicious, as was the breakfast. Corridors leading to the rooms are a bit dark and need updating, as does the tiny elevator. The area around the hotel is safe and there is a park nearby where we watched alpine horn players practice.

If you're going to take the Glacier Express train south, you'll probably wind up staying in Chur or St. Moritz because it's an 8:30 a.m. departure. You could stay at the ABC across from the train station, but I kind of remember that either being sold out or really pricey and were looking for something a little less expensive because we were only crashing for the night, getting up, and getting out of Chur.

The reviews for the Drei Konige looked pretty good, so we went for it. Honestly, of the 7 hotels we stayed in during a 10 day trip to Switzerland, this was by far the worst. I got the feeling from the reviews that it had some kind of old world charm, but what we found was a hotel reminiscent of some of the places I stayed in Eastern Bloc countries in the late 1980's. It really was on par with a Super 8 in the states.

The girl at the front desk was wonderful and the breakfast was fine. And, as is common in Switzerland, the room was spotless. Those were the good things.

I have never in my life been in a room with less soundproofing than this one. Especially notable was the sensation that the person in the bathroom connected to yours was actually doing their thing in your own bathroom.

Wifi access was tragic, although they promised each floor had its own server. However, I had this experience all over Switzerland . . . so can't knock this hotel in particular for it. it always seemed, all over the country, that the wifi was turned off at midnight, which was of course the time I wanted to use Skype to call my little girl in the States. I have never been so consistently annoyed with the lack of wifi -- ever. I just gave up by the end of the trip. Americans clearly place a higher priority on this than the Swiss, and sometimes I felt like asking for it was met with a bit of disdain.

The elevator in this hotel is about 3 feet square, and as you go up in it, the walls of the consecutive floors whizz by you with no barrier . . . so God forbid you point a finger or have a loose coat hanging. It could be dangerous.

When you get out of the elevator, you'll see the hall floor is done in black and white checkered 9 inch vinyl tile (noisy), which is surreal up against the (if I remember correctly) institutional day glo green walls. There are very small Van Gogh-esque paintings hung on the walls at nearly the ceiling level. The hall is long and the ceiling is high. The lights are motion-activated and some sort of fluorescent blue, so when you come out of the elevator to go to your room, you feel off-kilter and just like you're in a 1958 episode of The Twilight Zone that takes place in a flop house. It really reminded me of a hotel I stayed in in Prague in 1987, but that one had the bathrooms in the hallway.

I think we spent $264 to stay in this hotel for 10 hours. There is a Romantik hotel across the street that was slightly more expensive and probably worth it if you're going to stay longer than we did.

It has a smoking lounge, a computer lounge, a breakfast room. The room had a double sink which was in the bedroom. The toilet and shower were in a separate room. Again, the room was spotless, but had a dorm feel. It was about a 5 block walk to the Chur train station. There is a very good parking garage (they validate) and CoOp grocery store 2 blocks away.

All in all, the room was clean, the staff was excellent, the location was fine for the Glacier Express. Put all of those things in a beautiful hotel and you've got a winning combination. Unfortunately, the building and design didn't live up to the price or the quality of the staff.

A huge amount of stairs greet you when you arrive at this hotel. You immediately notice that the carpet is drab and the place could do with investment. We received a lovely welcome and staff were very helpful. It was good to have wireless and an internet room. Breakfast was excellent and so was the meal we had the night before. It was the room that was particularly disappointing. The curtains were hanging off the rail-the hand-basins were in the bedroom. The bedlinen was crisp and clean, however. There was an unpleasant smell on the corridor leading to our room which was off putting. We had beautiful spires outside our room and we slept well.

Room Tip: I'd imagine they are all drab.
