“An excellent hotel”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 April 2012

This is a great place to spend a holiday.

The location is fantastic - sweeping views of the Lauterbrunnen valley and of the mountain range behind. It's a 5 or 10 min walk downhill from the village centre but the porters will run you up there in one of their electric vehicles at the drop of a hat. We enjoyed the walk though.

We had a large south facing room. It was very comfortable and clean with a lovely balcony and chairs. The bathroom was also very good.

The place has been in the same family for over 130 years and they take great care and pride in running the hotel. We found all of the staff friendly, courtious and attentive.

The lounge and bar area are great - again, really comfortable, with nice furniture, board games and a real fire that was always lit in the evenings.

The food was excellent - of a very high standard. Special mention goes to the excellent cheeseboard. There's always a choice for vegetarians.

I would recommend it without hesitation.

My wife and I spent 3 beautiful nights in this charming property. We had a "larger" room with a balcony looking south toward the majestic mountains. The room was actually quite small but who wants to stay in the room with the beauty of Wengen around you?

The family that runs the hotel are efficient and welcoming; the mainly Portuguese staff members are especially nice and made us feel at home. The hotel dog Mara is especially sweet!

We got the 1/2 board meal plan and we were very impressed by the quality of the food, especially the salad buffet for dinner.

My one criticism is that the bread is often handled by the guest's bare hands at the buffet--there should be proper cloth napkins around the bread to minimize everyone holding and touching the bread while they cut a piece. The cheese platters also suffer from lack of proper utensils making it necessary to hold a piece of cheese while the guests cut--not the most hygienic method of cheese serving. Other than this minor quibble, I would gladly return to the Alpenrose.

We have now stayed here 4 times and eagerly look forward to returning each year. The hotel is warm comfortable, beautifully equipped and welcoming. The food is divine, beds comfortable and to sit on your balcony looking at the Lauterbrunnen Valley and surrounding mountains is awesome. We have always stsyed during the busiest time Of the year Race Week yet the service and standards have never slipped. I recommend this hotel without reservation

We spent a week in a south facing room at this lovely hotel which is one of the cleanest we have stayed in for many a year.
The staff are unobtrusively attentive and the food is quite simply excellent value for money and of superior quality.
There are not many dining options (that we could see) in Wengen so the half board option is a godsend .
The hotel has been very sensitively refurbished providing modern facilities but still in a very attractive, typical swiss style. The heating system is second to none!
Our only complaint was the disturbance from the small children of some family groups where parental control was absent or "on hold" for the holidays during our stay there. This was not the hotel's fault at all, obviously, but I think this lovely hotel does not cater for children and , indeed does not claim to.
Children left to run around the lounge areas playing hide and seek whilst parents have their own quiet and leisurely meal is not fair to other guests . Neither do we appreciate having children, who are not interested in eating, wandering around other people's tables. Perhaps the owners could exert a little more authority over the lax attitudes of some parents.
As many have mentioned -alcohol is prohibitively expensive everywhere, and this includes the hotel restaurant where a simple bottle of Pinot Grigio was approx £32! Many guests did not let the prices deter them however but the cost of the 5 /6 course meal is so very reasonable that the beverage prices were a real surprise.
There is a well stocked supermarket on the road in to Wengen which sells alcohol however.
Despite staying 7 nights we did not automatically have a bed linen change-we were told it was not hotel policy- but this was done on request.
Shampoo was provided on arrival but we were not given refills until we asked.
No bath/shower gel is provided, or flannels, but this is not peculiar to this hotel in our experience these days and we generally take a both with us in case.
The pillows are very soft and comfortable but compress to a thin layer but more were brought on request-as I have mentioned-the staff are very obliging.
The hotel's location is ideal for those wanting a quiet time and soundless nights and the views are wonderful. We saw the valley in snow with frozen waterfalls and in spring sunshine-a view to lift the spirits.
The skiing is varied and excellent though we have not skied in Europe for 30 years and the time it takes to get to the slopes reminded me why! Eating and drinking on the slopes is pretty expensive so be warned and home- made picnics were not welcome anywhere that we saw.
Walking on the mountain was wonderful with reserved tracks for walkers only allowing non skiers to enjoy the same scenery as skiers.
The trip to The Top of Europe is well worth the effort and the train ticket is half price if you already have a ski pass. The scenery from there is breath taking and we have some extraordinary photos to prove it.
Finally, we spent a very nostalgic and child- like few hours on the sledging runs-great fun when you have skied enough but still want something to do in the great outdoors.
So all in all a wonderful holiday and we would definitely recommend this hotel to any discerning travellers-the few niggles were minor and we enjoyed ourselves to the extent that we are thinking of a return visit for a walking holiday in the future.

A lovely hotel, I couldn't fault it. The family owners and staff are to a person very friendly but always extremely professional and quite obviously, and quite rightly, proud of their hotel. I booked direct with the hotel and had paid for a mountainside room, as it was a little cheaper and I figured we wouldn't spent a lot of time, if any, on the balcony or looking at the view. However as we booked in I was pleasantly surprised to find that we had been upgraded to a lovely room at the front, with a magnificent view, because they 'had no mountain rooms left'. I suspect they just did it out of kindness. It didn't take long to relax and feel at home here. Nothing was too much trouble for anyone. We used the mini van service to take us up to the station every morning (it is a bit of a pull up the hill, nothing too bad but a little time consuming when you're racing to ski school!) and it never seemed like an inconvenience to the staff, in fact it was nice to spend a little time chatting on the way. The restaurant was lovely and the food and service excellent, every night. It does attract a slightly older crowd I would say, and a lot of regulars (if only!). Our 8 y.o son was the only child there until one other family arrived towards the end of the week. He loved it, loved his food, and enjoyed playing chess and cards in the lovely public rooms afterwards. As we sat there on an evening, Mara the beautiful hotel dog would do her rounds, greeting everyone. She is lovely. We've stayed at the Belvedere and in Lauterbrunnen and drank and ate in quite a few of the other hotels in Wengen and I can honestly say I feel that the Alpenrose is a cut above, but not in a snobby way, it's just better.
