Once you see the town, you realise why the view is so good from Hotel Alpina - it's because it's up one end of town and practically on the edge of the cliff. All the other fancy hotels are set back from the edge, trying to see over each others' rooves.

The rooms were extremely simple, with just 2 beds, 2 lights, a TV, a wardrobe, a fridge and a table & chairs. But what else do you really need? We were impressed that the whole place just felt so comfortable and clean, including the bathroom. We were quite happy to walk around in bare feet and lie on the bed etc.

Alpina is located near the end of town where the train arrives (rather than the gondola end), which is usually where you'd arrive anyway. Anywhere in Murren can be walked to in a pleasant 10-15 min. stroll past the snow-covered houses and shops. There's a grocery store, bank and post office nearby. There's a sport centre for all equipment rental requirements. Alpina guests get free use of the pool and ice-rink at the sports centre, but you still have to hire skates for CHF8/day. Toboggans are a mere CHF7/day. Without any discount passes, lifts/gondolas in the area cost CHF6-10 (so e.g. if you want to do 3 toboggan runs, it may cost you 6x3 +7 for the toboggan hire). Or you could walk for free for 45-60mins per run.

We stayed for two nights at the beginning of October - booked this hotel based on Tripadvisor reviews so knew what to expect. The first bonus is that this hotel is a 5 minute downhill walk from the station, pretty much the first hotel you reach as you walk down into the village.
The room was right out of the 70s, but clean and comfortable. We had got an online deal for the room and were told when we checked in that we would have to pay to upgrade to a room with a mountain view (an extra 20 CHF per night - a little annoying given that the hotel was half empty!) However, the view is what makes this place. The hotel is perched right on the edge of the valley and has uninterupted views of the mountains. We were lucky in that we had very good weather so got the full benefit of the views while sitting on the private balcony.
Breakfast was good (although the sliced bread was too small for the toaster and had to be fished out with a knife!). The windows in the dining room have the same amazing view so try and get a window seat for breakfast. In the evening we ate in the little Chinese cafe a few door along which was basic but nice. Murren itself is very picturesque and we are glad we chose to stay here rather than Interlaken. We would definately stay here again. If you like walking/hiking it's worth taking the cable car up to the Shilthorn and walking down to the middle cablecar station - spectacular views. We also took the little train up to Schynige Platte - again a great circular walk and fantastic views over the lakes.

The hotel may be older and the rooms on the small size, but that is more than made up for by the monumental view of the Monk, the Eiger and the Jungfrau peaks. The staff is warm and welcoming, the bar cozy and the restaurant has delicious rosti. We stayed in a corner room on the 2nd floor of rooms (bottom floor is the bar, lobby, restaurant etc) with a wrap-around balcony and a huge picture window. We woke each morning to the staggering views. The hamlet of Murren is essentially car-free (only the hotels, restaurants have small cars) and wonderfully quiet. This is the place to stay in the Jungfrau region!

Stayed in Alpina with bad weather conditions (fog) so couldn't enjoy the view which I imagine to be really great. Hotel itself is rather shabby, breakfast poor. Got single room with spartian decoration, a bit cold (maybe due to limited, out-of-season occupation of the building) and very small. Bed lamp didn't work. Was glad to have dinner in other much more comfy hotel. Hotel owners seemed quite hospitable, but I didn't like them trying to put me in one of their more expensive rooms with mountain view when you couldn't see at 50 meters, without mentioning the option of cheaper rooms facing the street.

My husband and I stayed at the Hotel Alpina during our recent trip to Switzerland. The view from our room, which was south/valley facing, was amazing! It looked like it was straight from a postcard. We saw a great sunrise over the mountain from our patio. Room was very clean. Roger and all the staff there were very friendly. Breakfast in the morning was great. The location was great, very close to the train station. The experience just to get to Murren (from Interlaken) was great in itself (train, cable car then cog wheel). The town of Murren was very nice and quite. Lots of great hiking trails. Would definitely stay there again!
