This new hotel is wonderfully convenient to the train station (the trains are electric and very quiet so not an issue). Family traveled easily from ZRH in only 45mins. Directly outside both entrances to the hotel are ramps to tunnels which lead to the train station, downtown Schaffausen, and convenience stores for quick snacks or necessities (and even a McDonald's). Staff at the hotel are courteous and helpful. Rooms are well appointed. Be sure to use the buttons by the light switches to lower the exterior blinds (took us a day to figure that one out). Breakfast buffet is very nice but get there early enough as the staff is prompt about taking things away to set up for the brunch service.
The town is small and very pretty. Even though the CHF and USD are virtually equivalent, be aware that Switzerland is an expensive country. Enjoy the bakeries. We had two nice lunches at Santa Lucia (Italian food). A short drive or hike to the Rhine Falls and Schloss Laufen should be on the agenda. The Falls are the "largest" in Europe (although smaller than other falls around the world) and the Schloss has a wonderful history.
In Winter season, many of the castles and other attractions are closed during the week, so be sure to check with a local or hotel or call the site directly as not all of the websites have current hours of operation.More
