Owner description: The Kunstmuseum Basel is home to one of the largest and oldest public museum collections in Europe. In its unique history, it has assembled works from the early fifteenth century to the present. The Kunstmuseum Basel houses the Galerie (Gallery) and the Kupferstichkabinett (Department of Prints and Drawings). The main focus is on paintings and drawings by artists active in the Upper Rhine region between 1400 and 1600 and of the 19th and 21st century. The Kunstmuseum Basel possesses the world`s largest collection of works by the Holbein family. Further examples of Renaissance art include major pieces by masters such as Konrad Witz, Martin Schongauer, Lucas Cranach the Elder and Matthias Grünewald. Most of these early treasures originally belonged to the collection of a Basel lawyer, Basilius Amerbach. Purchased by the city in 1661, they formed the core of the world`s first public municipal museum. Paintings by Basel-born Arnold Böcklin feature among the 19th-century highlights. In the field of 20th-century art, the accent is on Cubism (Picasso, Braque, Léger), German Expressionism, Abstract Expressionism and American art since 1950. Contemporary art is exhibited at the Museum für Gegenwartskunst (Museum of Contemporary Art).

“Very worthwhile”

There is so much to see and do in Basal but this was one of the best. The current Renoir special exhibition is brilliant and we were grateful for the headphones with English commentary. The great surprise in this attractive, not-too-large museum is that it has an amazing collection of the best of the best works of modern sculpture and painting in its existing collection. They've got massive sculptures by Rodin (indoors and out), and such a variety of works from early Picasso to late Leger...even a Swiss impressionist, we'd never heard of. The museum is just a short walk between the train station and the river. It's well worth it! BTW, as with hundreds of other museums, admission was free with our Swiss Rail passes.

“One of the best”

The Renoir collection was being shown which is a treasure unto itself but once we were finished that part of the exhibition we were amazed at the amazing collection that this museum has obtained. The architecture of this building is to be enjoyed also. A must do if you come to Basel.

Museum is easy to get to, as there is a tram stop very close. Well organised, and a wonderful selection of paintings

“Mix and match”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 February 2012

It's a typical mix and match gallery. Strange modern art, slightly boring religious art (that you might like) but you can see some lovely Picassos there too!
