“Location and view”
Reviewed 9 April 2012

Basel is a charming but noisy city due to the abundance of tramways. They rattle at all times during the day and most of the night, starting again in the wee hours of the morning. If you happen to stay in a room facing the back of the hotel, you will not be able to sleep. Things change drastically though if you book a room facing the Rhine river, especially if it's on a higher floor. The view is fantastic and the noise no longer a problem. Location is superb, with a 5-minute walk across the small bridge to city center. Rooms are rather small but well laid out. They have all the usual amenities, and attention to details one can expect from a Best Western hotel. Staff is exceptionally friendly and helpful and speak English very well. Breakfast buffet (included in the price) is served in a charming, expansive room and the food selection is very good (though no omelets made to order). Fresh delicious breads, wonderful cheeses and the usual offerings. The price is high for what you get if you use N.American standards, but this is more of a Swiss issue than the hotel. Nothing is cheap in this country.

Room Tip: Higher floors facing the Rhine. Be aware they may be hot during summer months.

I am giving this 4 star hotel a very good rating mostly due to the location and the fact that if you book a room with a Rhein view its amazing, small balcony and large doors that open on to it, the room is also a decent size. Hotel is very near the old town as well. The hotel its self has a few nice touches like nespresso coffee machine in room and free non alcoholic drinks in the fridge, slippers etc its nice but not luxury. Breakfast is usual selection of hot and cold food and is not bad. I would recommend this hotel for the exceptional views! Reception staff are friendly and can give you ideas on where to go. Its also good location for trams etc.

Room Tip: pay extra for rhein view

Stayed for 2 nights in November 2011. Location just perfect in the nice town center looking on the Rhine. You have to carry your luggage on the steps and there is no clear sign that you can enter the hotel smoothly through the Spitz Cafe. The room although modest was very well-equipped. Staff are friendly especially the night warden. Breakfast AOK. Have left early in the morning and provided with nice breakfast box. Would be glad to pay a visit to this hotel next time in Basel.

Room Tip: Look for the river view.

Spent one night in the beginning of Septmber before boarding our river cruise. The hotel is located in the center of town with great views of the Rhine. Breakfast is usually included (depend on who you book with), it was good. There is no air-conditioning so I would be hesitant in mid-summer. All Basel hotels offer a free pass for there trams, so transportation is easy. The taxi fare to where the river boats dock is about 30 swiss francs, and no tram line go that far. Overall a nice place with some old world charm in center city.
