“Disappointing”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 June 2012

We booked this hotel through American Express Travel team, which usually provide good quality hotels, as we were struggling to find hotels in Siena. Unfortunately due to delays in our flight and our connections we arrived at the hotel at 11.30pm and hence we were one of the last to check in. Our room reflected this. As we opened the door the stink of stale smoke hit us. As non-smokers this is pretty unacceptable to us. Room was clean but in serious need of TLC. I was also disappointed when I sat in the middle of the bed only to be hit by wood, our kingsize bed was indeed 2 single beds stuck together. The lovely balcony was used as a bin for cigarette ends which had never been cleaned up.

However, the location of this hotel is good, luckily our room was on the quieter side of the hotel and it was at the cheaper end of the bracket for Siena hotels. But for us we sacrificed quality for the price. The breakfast was fine but the restaurant staff were pretty bossy! The staff all in all were helpful, excluding the night time receptionist who was v little help in finding us somewhere to eat.

I would only book this hotel as a last resort and most definitely not if looking for romantic break.

Like most NH Hotels I've stayed at this one had a "good" location and good price. Unfortunately being on a major piazza made for a noisy evening. Having central air conditioning control made things worse since we were there at the turn of seasons and the heat was still on, so you had to open the windows and live with the noise or sleep in the heat. I had requested back side rooms based on other recommendations but this could not accommodated. Hotel was otherwise up to date and might be worth another try in the winter. On the plus side you can drive right up, find convenient parking, and there is a nice Irish pub (part of the noise issue) right across the street.

Room Tip: Confirm on the back side away from the piazza or find a different hotel.

We stayed 2 nights in July 2012. A simple double room is all you need in Siena. Most of the day you will be out exploring and eating. It was good to come back to a clean, smart hotel just a few minutes walk from the centre of Siena. I would liken our room to a Premier Inn (if you have ever stayed in one of those in the UK) - it does the job very well and without fuss. There will undoubtedly be more beautiful hotels or ones with better views in Siena - but if all you are doing is showering and sleeping then who cares!

Breakfast was buffet style and reasonably good. The staff were helpful but a bit slow with the check-in. Immediately outside the hotel is the bus stop for connections to Pisa, Florence etc - very handy if you are traveling onwards.

Our room had a view over the pitch of FC Siena! Would have been interesting to stay there when a match was being played. We could also see the Fortress and the Duomo from our balcony.

There were a few niggles - our safe did not work and the door to the balcony did not lock properly, being British I did not bother to complain. But on balance I would stay here again - it seems to offer the best value for a short trip to Siena.

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking the pitch and you will probably get a balcony and a view of the Duomo.

We went to Siena from Rome on a whim, and NH Excelsior was the best hotel we had in two weeks in Italy! The Staff had great English, area knowledge and recommended a restaurant that was Fantastic. The room was clean, the restroom was great with a full sized bath. Great location, easy to walk around, when we were they they had a market right outside the hotel on Sunday (what a treat). Breakfast had bacon and eggs, and it was more 'American' then other hotels serve, so that was nice too. The only negative is you pay to use the lobby computer its slow (like from the 80's!!!), so it took 8 minutes to open my mail; a real waist of money, I complained and they didn't seem to care. We have already recommended it to a traveling couple we met at the station there, and a couple of our friends back home.

I had read reviews of this hotel and was a little leary of staying here, however, no need to worry. I was surprised by how nice the staff was and they went out of their way to help. When we checked in there was a huge fair going on in Piazza La Lizza as well as the fort behind that. Lots of carnival rides and music, so I asked if our room would be on that side of the hotel. Well, it was, but they offered to move us. Gave us a room on -2 which I was worried was underground, but it was not. It was a huge room with a great bathroom and was very quite (on opposite side of carnival). I had problems with my phone and the internet and they let me use their computer. I was very happy with the service we received and the hotel itself is quite awesome. We stayed at all B & B's except for this hotel and I loved it. The breakfast was by far the best we had during our 2wks in Italy with a huge buffet and lots of choices. We loved the granola cereal, but they had eggs and bacon, fruits, pastries, juices and more I am forgetting! I would not hesitate to stay here again. Oh, the location is nice--right next to the bus station and only 5min to the Campo. No complaints here!
