We stayed at the Arcobaleno Hotel in Siena for 4 nights during the first week of May, 2008. The staff was wonderful. Upon our arrival we were given a nice map of Siena and shown the easiest way to walk into the center of Siena. Throughout our stay they answered several questions we had and were very friendly and helpful. Our room was fairly large and decorated nicely. It was also very, very clean. I was amazed at how well the room was cleaned and straightened up each day. The breakfast in the morning was not extensive but still good. We used the Internet point in the lobby and it was very fast and reliable. The charge was 3 euros for 1 hour.

It took us about 30 minutes to walk to the main square in Siena from the hotel. Because we only spent one day visiting Siena and spent the rest of the time going to other towns in the area this didn't really bother us. However, if someone was planning on spending most of their time in the center of Siena, the walk to and from the hotel might get old.

My biggest complaint about our stay was the shower in the bathroom. It was not just a shower - it was also a bidet! It was very small and I know a few people that probably wouldn't fit in it. The doors didn't close well and water collected on the floor each time it was on. I dreaded having to use it every morning. The outlet for high powered devices in the room wouldn't work so I couldn't plug in my blow dryer and had to use the one in the bathroom instead. The bathroom's blow dryer didn't work well, so I found having to use it very annoying. The room also had thin walls - we could hear people in neighboring rooms quite often. Because of these issues if we ever traveled to Tuscany again we would find a different hotel to stay in.

We truly enjoyed our stay at Arcobaleno. Very cozy and warm feel to the hotel. Rooms have been recently updated and are modern looking. Excellent continental breakfast and friendly staff. Distance from city centre is the only drawback. It's a 20-25 minute walk to the city centre. The first 5 minutres of the walk are not enjoyable as you are on a secondary route. Location come is handy is you have a car with you as parking is free. The bus stop is a 3 minute walk and will take you to the city centre for 1 Euro. Would highly recommend this hotel. Great value for your money.

The Arcobaleno is a nice place to stay, but there are some things to watch out for.

The most important of these is the distance from the hotel to the city wall, the porta and the old city. It takes about 15-20 minutes to walk to the nearest entry through the wall. Then it's another 10 minutes or so to get to the campo or about 15 minutes to the duomo. It's a pleasant enough walk in the morning on your way to town, but late at night when you're tired, it's just a bit too far.

I don't really understand the reference to the "hill" in a number of reviews. Perhaps people are referring to the very slight upgrade as you walk through town on your way back to the hotel. In any case that didn't bother us.

The room was very clean, but quite small as was the bathroom. The air conditioning is good.

Breakfast was very basic, although the outside area is pleasant.

Staff were very friendly and helpful.

This is a very comfortable hotel with English-speaking staff that is walkable (although slightly uphill) from the train station. The room was basic but very comfortable. The breakfast, which is included with the room, was fantastic. The attached restaurant is also very good - one of the best pizzas we had in 2 weeks in Italy - seriously. The only drawback is that the walk into the town is about 30 minutes. Apparently it is easy to take the bus into town, and the bus stop is right next door, but we really preferred to walk.

My husband and I stayed in this hotel for 1 night during our 3 week Italian honeymoon. And thank god it was only for one night . . .!

The room smelled really musty, and the bedsheets felt quite damp when we checked in. We actually had to leave the windows open all night to put up with the smell, despite the bugs that came in.

The bathroom was also pretty gross, with the shower/ bidet combo (!!) covered in someone else's hair and mold.

We did research before we left and were looking forward to a basic but clean and comfortable night, and we were quite disappointed. At check-in, the guy at the front desk even offended my husband. When the clerk noticed, he started babbling on about how we shouldn't pay any attention to him, he wasn't very good with english.

On the plus side, he did redeem himself slightly with an excellent recommendation for a restaurant that evening. However, the entire experience was not good. This was the worst hotel we stayed in during our entire trip, by far!

I'm afraid to say that I wouldn't recommend it, even if you are looking for an inexpensive place to stay. To me, cleanliness isn't something I compromise on, and I would have gladly spent a little more for a room that was at least not filthy.
