“Good as a Michelin restaurant should be.....”
Reviewed 25 April 2012

we arrived at 7.30pm (they open in the evenings at 7pm). We did not book but they kindly found us a table for 2 (booking recommended) although we had to be finished by 8.50 as the table had already been reserved. Given this we only ordered 2 courses, which were both well prepared. We had a starter, pasta, cheese (1 between 2) and a bottle of wine, total bill 90EUR. The waiter was not very attentive. Felt it did not offer value for money as we have had better food and value elsewhere on our Italian trip.

“Fantástico!!!”
Reviewed 24 April 2012

Excellent all the way! We ate at this place twice because the food was so delicious! Our waiter served us free of charge an after dinner wine that is from a small village in Sicily, we loved it so much that we ended up buying a bottle. We got surprised when we got two, one was on the house. The only bad thing is that we do not live in Siena to eat at San Giuseppe often! :)

“Traditional Sienese Cooking”
Reviewed 23 April 2012

This is a lovely Siena restaurant, on the upper slope of the via Dupre, with Sienese food of a high standard. On this occasion we concentrated on funghi and pasta dishes and were not disappointed. The range of Chianti Classico is impressive, the Brunello di Montalcino (2001) we had was superb. There is in addition the fascinating Etruscan cellar/dormitory to see where cheese is now stored. As we walked to this restaurant on a pleasant evening this April we saw nearby at the Prato di Sant'Agostino banner-men and drummers of the Onda contrade practising for the Palio – a bonus indeed.

“GLORIOUS!!”
Reviewed 20 April 2012

One of the best meals I’ve had in a LONG TIME! We arrived 30 minutes late and were unfortunately seated at a table immediately next to the service station. As I love wine, I got into the menu and ordered a couple of special bottles from the selection of over 500 labels. Shortly thereafter, the party at a better-positioned table paid the bill and left. Our waiter asked if we would like to move (PLUS).

Wine/Service:

Once we were re-positioned, our waiter delicately prepared our two bottles by decanting them through a flame (PLUS), separating the sediment from the old Brunello di Montalcino and Chianti Classico. He also prepped our wine glasses (PLUS) by swirling a bit of the wine around the inside of the bowl, something I rarely see and am always happy about. The Chianti Classico was over 25 years old, which I would avoid ordering if in the U.S. but thought I’d risk it given our closeness to the region. I’ll save the wine talk for a more appropriate blog but in short, the wine was perfect! (PLUS)

Food:

After we ordered Tagliatelle with Black Truffles, our waiter suggested we split the plate with Gnocchi, as well. It was a great tip (PLUS) as the Gnocchi was incredibly light and delicate, having been made with Ricotta cheese. There was a healthy amount of black truffle shavings on the dishes when they arrived but our waiter dashed over and shaved another gram or two, completely hiding the pasta underneath (PLUS PLUS).

After our primi, our waiter asked if we would like to pause before our Fiorentina Bistecca was fired (PLUS). Later on the raw cut of beef was shown to us before being cooked (PLUS). The cut was gigantic weighing close to 2 kilos (4 pounds). Once cooked it was dexterously carved tableside (PLUS) and prepped with olive oil and copious amounts of salt and pepper. Each piece was dark red in the middle with a caramelized exterior. Interestingly, this beef does not have an intense flavor like corn fed USDA prime does. All the ingredients (beef, oil, salt, and pepper) stood out yet combined to something harmonious but simple.

In sum: OUTSTANDING food and service!

“The best resto in Siena!!!”
Reviewed 20 April 2012

After a long day of travelling to get to Siena we had the pleasure to have dinner at this nice restaurant! We ordered two pastas to start (our waiter suggested me to try two types of pasta with the creamy truffled sauce and my husband had the typical Sienese pici alla cinghiali). Both were delicious and didn't make us feel too full so we shared a bisteca alla fiorentina that the lady brought on a tray to show us its huge size! The waiter did all the work of cutting the big steak for us but we found it too bloody, so we asked the waiter to have it cooked to medium and it arrived just the way we like it! We had the steak with some grilled veggies and white beans that came in a closed jar and when we opened it, it was smelling of rosemary! The wines by the glass were generously served! The lady also gave me a small truffled honey as a gift and I loved the treat!
Although it was an expensive meal, we enjoyed each dish and left there very happy! Highly recommend to book a table.
