Taking a side street north from Santa Croce Church, we made a serendipitous discovery, a non-descript house with a sign "Casa Buonarroti". That's Michelangelo's family name. And when we entered, we learned that this was the location of the home where the famous artist grew up. After his death, family members expanded his home to create a proper memorial. On the lower floor, there are display cases of artifacts ( oil lamps etc) found on site. The second floor contains rooms a half a dozen rooms displaying art, some by Michelangelo himself (2 early relief sculptures, various sketches) and paintings by later generations to honor him. We had the whole place to ourselves, just 2 other individuals during our hour-long visit. A hidden gem.
