We spent eight very pleasant days in Hotel Astoria. Our room was comfortable and well maintained. Top marks to the entire staff for exceptionally professional service combined with a cheerful human touch. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and can recommend Hotel Astoria to anyone coming to Florence.

Room Tip: We stayed on the forth floor, the view over the rooftops of Florence was beautiful. Good airconditio...

The hotel is in a great location, just a few steps to the Uffizi, the Duomo, shops, restaurants, grocery stores and the train station. This must've been a grand place in it's time you can still appreciate the architectural details but it is outdated. My room was comfortable with a nice view and very spacious but some things were falling apart, like the hair dryer wasn't working. The staff, some were friendly and some were not. We had a four course meal at the restaurant and it was delicious. They only have Wi-fi in the common areas which made it very inconvenient having to go down to the lobby to use it. Despite all of that, we did enjoy our stay and love the convenient location. Please note that the hotel is within the ZTL (zona traffico limitado) if you are driving. They will make arrangaments for a parking garage at the price of 39.00 euros a day or give you a special pass just to drop your luggage but then you will need to go find parking elsewhere (which is not an easy thing to do)

first, just let me state how great the staff was. very polite, very helpful, esp luigi.
but the rooms. argh. i couldn't lock my door, there was no air conditioning, and my queen sized bed was actually two twins pushed together so i couldn't even sleep comfortably across the middle (i mean, why have a queen if you can't spread out across it??)
location was close to the train station, great if you are carrying a lot of luggage, but a little bit far from the main attractions. thankfully the weather wasn't too bad. also, i asked for a non-smoking room, but the room felt like it probably used to be a room for smokers. and the layout of the hotel was terrible. took me a good 15 mins to find my room the first time. honestly, i paid for a 4-star hotel, i really was expecting a 4-star room. but the room i got was worse than the room i paid for a 2-star hotel. how disappointing.

Not expecting luxury, we loved the charm and comfort of this hotel. The breakfast room is beautiful and the dining room lovely. We were here off-season and the staff was very friendly and more than accommodating. The location is perfect, convenient to all the sites of Florence. The views of the Duomo at night are breath-taking! This was the perfect beginning to our Italy trip!

Room Tip: In season it might be wise to ask for a room that does not window on the street.

Of the 3 hotels planned through our tour co., this was the only one that remained unchanged. Pity!! Pluses are: located in the heart of Florence, magnificent staircase and chandeliers, nice terrace with potted plants and wonderful view of the Duomo. Otherwise, the back of the couch in the reception area was filthy with hair grease, as well as the adjacent chair arms. We were shown to our room thru a tiny door on the hallway landing. The musty smell took my husband aback, though I never noticed, the carpet was stained, and the sides of the rug were worn on steps leading to the bedroom. The furniture was worn, as well, and the room was dark. We complained and were switched to a most satisfactory room. This place needs a complete makeover and could resurrect itself as a beauty to behold. (The photo of the breakfast room ceiling was worth taking. Mine was blown up to an 11 x 14 and is one of many Italian photos over my living room mantel.) DONT HESITATE TO COMPLAIN. That is the only way a hotel can face up to their problems, as they'll get sick of hearing them.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The Hotel Boscolo Astoria Firenze is the ideal choice for your stay: you'll be accommodated in the rooms of the Palazzo Gaddi and Palazzo Arrighetti, historic buildings belonging to noble Florentine families, where art recounts the passage of centuries every step of the way. Indeed, it was while living at Palazzo Gaddi that the great English author John Milton found inspiration for his masterpiece, Paradise Lost, and in these very rooms that he wrote it. The noble past of Hotel Boscolo Astoria Firenze is also reflected in its location: the church of Santa Maria Novella, abounding in great art, is right nearby (as is the convenient railway station with the same name), and a short stroll will take you directly to Florence's historic centre. An undeniable advantage that puts the most beautiful areas of the city right at your fingertips. The prestigious salons of the luxury Hotel Boscolo Astoria Firenze, decorated in original Florentine Baroque style, are the perfect backdrop for important events. The restaurant will pamper you with typical Tuscany and Mediterranean dishes. ... more   less
