““Premier” Location, Average Hotel”
Reviewed 14 June 2012

Pros -

LOCATION – this hotel is located within view of the Duomo and a very short walk to it. It is also a relatively short walk to the various piazzas and the Arno River and Ponte Vecchio bridge. The location does not get much better, though Florence is not very spread out and most hotels likely have good locations.

Free Wifi – the internet is free and fairly fast. The front desk gives you a code which is changed every three days and which you have to enter as you begin to surf the web. It is a convenient amenity.

Wine/Breakfast Bar – this bar at the top of the hotel has a great view of the city and the Duomo. It is nice to have. It also has a full breakfast from 7 to 10 with Italian-style bacon and salami along with eggs and the continental fare. I found it one of the more extensive breakfast buffets in my Europe trip, but for an American, it still lacks in quantity and quality. Remember that Europeans in general and Italians in particular often skip the heavy breakfast, so to have a breakfast buffet is much to this hotel's credit.

Bathrooms – the bathrooms are VERY nice (nicer than the rest of the rooms) and are more akin to what you would find in a 4 or 5 star hotel. A slight note is that the shower panel only goes about a third of the way down, so make sure not to soak your floor. However, the bathrooms and the amenities (such as hair/body shower gel) were appreciated.

Cleanliness – the rooms were cleaned every day extensively, which was nice when returning after a long day of touring.

Staff – the staff were efficient and corporate. Took care of all of our needs.

Cons -

Mattresses – they were very hard, short, and narrow – even moreso than usual European beds. I stayed in a room with two twin beds but even still, it was smaller than expecting. It is not good especially if you roll or turn when sleeping. If you get cold, there are extra blankets and pillows, but see the next point...

Air Conditioning – this hotel does indeed have air conditioning, but is impossible to set below 24 degrees Celsius (77 degrees Fahrenheit). It is deceptive, as you can lower it down to 19 degrees, but it almost immediately turns back to 24. We found ourselves sleeping with the window open (on a noisy street) because it was slightly cooler outside. This is a major problem and one that needs fixing.

Wine Bar Prices – we were fortunate to have received a set of free drinks with our booking. Even though the selection was limited to mimosas, we were grateful for the gift. One in our party chose to have a small beer, which was 6 Euro. This is a very high price and it seems much of the menu was equally overpriced. This is a Best Western, not a Ritz Carlton. We'd expect slightly lower prices.

Overall – if I were to return to Florence, this hotel would be on my list to consider staying at. However, the first two Cons were a significant burden and I would advise the hotel to consider alleviating them. Placing those aside, this would have been a better experience. As it stands, the hotel does what you need it to do with some extras, and is in a great location. I would recommend you consider this on a trip to Florence.

Room Tip: Some rooms have a good view, but loud noise. Others have a view of an alley, but less noise. Your...

Considering this was the most expensive hotel we booked for our time in italy we were disapointed with the actual hotel for the price we paid the ammenities were not as good. But it was fine if all you need is a small, clean room. The other hotels we stayed at in italy were cheaper and had brand new amenities and had lovely pools and were very modern and well equiped with free internet etc. The staff were not overly helpful, but seemed pleasant

This hotel is a bit old and needed a bit of an update, there was few amenities and the rooms were quite small compared to where we have stayed
The breakfast was also probably the smallest selection we have had in our holidays aswell. There was no where to go to relax during the day other than your room, the terrace overlooking a bit of florence is only open for a few hours at night.
The rooms were clean though. They charged us to use internet which was one of the only places we stayed that did.

However the location is excellent, so i guess you pay for the location for this one, its about a 2 minute walk to the main street, its so central, the train station is also less than a 5 minute walk away, as are plenty of resturants. You can walk everywhere within a couple of minutes in florence. so the location is convenient and this makes up for the actual hotel

Hotel Laurus in the heart of Florence is an excellent hotel for seeing all the sights. Very clean, comfortable and a friendly and helpful staff. Just down from the Duomo, it doesn't get any closer to major sights.

Room Tip: We had a room with a view which let us see the Corpus Domini procession from above. We also had a p...

General Comments -- We had stayed 4 nights in Florence in June 2012, our first time in this truly beautiful city with the gorgeous Chianti countryside nearby. We booked the hotel for its location and we were definitely not dissappointed. It was truly in the middle of everywhere -- the train station, the bus station, the duomo (yes, you can see it on the roof terrace when you enjoy your complimentary welcome drink), the uffizi, the academia, ponte vecchio, shopping -- everything was truly 10 mins away.

The Room -- Despite its central location, our room was quiet, clean and compact. It was extremely comforting being able to come "home" to our peaceful sanctuary after a busy morning of touring all the sites. We highly recommend the rooms at towards the back of the hotel to maybe avoid the bells (quaint but...) as we were woken up by birds chirping away given that our room (408) was behind the hustle and bustle.

Further, although the hotel was not able to give us a late check-out, they could keep our luggage and we also had the mezzanine floor to ourselves to rest before our evening flight which was a quiet sanctuary with many books and magazines.

Lastly, next to the hotel is a really nice cafe with good coffee and pastry so if you want another option apart from the hotel breakfast, this would be a more cost efficient plan.

The Hotel Laurus was a gem in an tourist overcrowded city. We had a junior suite which was very spacious and well maintained. After touring all day, the rooftop was a delightful bastion of peace and quiet. We had several small dinners up there because we tended to overeat at lunch. The staff and the location were great. One night my wife had a dish she really enjoyed and the server took the time to write down exactly what it was so we could order it elsewhere.
I would definitely return but not during spring break.
