Seeing the magnificent David statue blew my expectations out of the water. The statue is perfect and I think every Florentine visitor needs to go here.

The lines can get quite busy so I highly recommend booking online (on their website or through a 3rd party if it is sold out) and pick up your tickets at the venue.

We spent some time here recently. Despite timed tickets, it’s still crowded. But most of the crowd is clustered around David, so there are plenty of less congested viewing opportunities, particularly the unfinished sculptures. Highly recommended.

We paid for a guided tour, mainly to skip the queue, but she was very knowledgeable and friendly. The gallery is not huge with loads to see, but it's a case of quality over quantity. David and Michaelangelo's other works are well worth the visit.

Michelangelo's David is a masterpiece of Renaissance sculpture.
David, a young boy, defeated the Goliath, a giant in a momentous battles. Whilst Goliath had an Armour and a shield, David only had stones and a sling. The battle is celebrated not so much for David's power but his intellect and battle tactics.

The societal interpretation of David in Florence and in the world at large is the open defence of the civic liberties movement.
The left picture is the Real David as created by Michelangelo with a single block of marble which is commissioned at Academia. The right is the replica of that David, a bronze David, victorious standing tall on the head of Goliath.
Michelangelo chose to show David not in victory, but at that point in time that prefigured victory: in that instance between conscious choice and conscious action, that moment when an individual makes a choice and commits to act on that choice. David stands, with furrowed brow, looking over his left shoulder into the distance for Goliath. Michelangelo shows David not as a triumphant victor, but as a thinking, resolute being the preconditions for victory.

So everyone obviously goes to see Michelangelo’s David but there is so much more to this gallery.

Pre book your tickets, get there early and take in the full range of exhibits and attractions in offer.
