A magnificent Neo-Classical exterior (used in the final scenes of Godfather III) houses a sumptuous interior (the third largest auditorium in Europe after Paris and Vienna). The painted dome is particularly beautiful. Do see an opera or ballet there if you can. It is easy to book online before your visit. Productions / soloist are not of top international quality but well worth seeing / hearing nonetheless. If you are lucky, tours are available and well worth your time.

The visit to the Opera House Teatro Massimo was conducted by a guide who related many stories about the earliest days of the Opera House. There is one room with costumes on display (much less than the tour of La Scala in Milano). Be sure to ask if the stage will be visible before you purchase your tour tickets ... it was closed off on our visit due to "a changeover" from the last Verdi opera. You do get to visit the royal box, the main floor and the orchestra pit, and several reception halls.

This theater is spectacular-- make sure you walk over there at night to see it lit up. Really impressive.

There was a rehearsal for Cinderalla ballet going on at the time of our tour and made it extra special.
