“Charming, if a bit threadbare.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 February 2012

My husband and I stayed at the Oreintale in March of 2010. We were greeted like family, given snacks upon arrival and pressured to take borrowed umbrellas with us when we went walking (we're from Oregon where no one bothers to carry an umbrella). The owners were VERY friendly and helpful despite the language barrier (we speak little Italian, they spoke little English).

Not necessarily hard to find, but if the exterior doors to the courtyard are closed it does blend in with the adjacent buildings; keep an eye out for street number. Breakfast was lackluster, but sufficient. Room was spotless, if a bit threadbare. The building itself is absolutely amazing; the fact that it has not been perfectly maintained adds to it's character. The charm of the hoteliers, their building, the central location and the price made it the perfect location for us.

Room Tip: We were cold and tired from a long trip, the owners let us choose from the available rooms which sui...

This excellent budget hotel is located only a few hundred metres from the main railway station in Palermo. Although on a main street it was surprisingly peaceful and quiet.
Forming half of the first floor of a 16th-Century Pallazzo the hotel has a feeling of timeless, if somewhat weathered, majesty. The large breakfast room has a magnificent fresco on the ceiling, and throughout the furnishings blended into the setting. Our room was clean and comfortable, and we had our own balcony overlooking the magnificent central courtyard.

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking courtyard

If you appreciate old world charm and want a reasonably priced hotel in a location that is absolutely perfect for walking to everything you need in historic Palermo, from the central station just a few blocks away to the Cappella Normanni, then the Orientale is the place for you. The building is 6 centuries old and it is exciting to imagine what is was like when it served as a palace so long ago. The rooms were comfortable and clean and Rosie at the desk was extremely helpful. It would serve you well to know a few words in Italian although Rosie knows enough English to get you what you need. The fresco on the ceiling in the breakfast room is breathtaking. We wanted a taste of life in Palermo and we certainly were not disappointed in the location and character that the Orientale offers.

Room Tip: Ask fora room on the courtyard side. Palermo is an active and busy place and life goes on to the w...

Old palace, Marvelous pink stairs (Lots of them), Minimal breakfast but good cappuccino and hot chocolate. 80 year old father, mother and daughter proprietors. Very helpful and kind, anxious to please; speak little English. Great option of accommodation near central station with more character than regular hotel.

I've read about "decadent charme". I found no charme, just decadence.

The hotel is located inside a building full of value, which would deserve more maintenance and care.
We asked for a silent room and got a huge one not on the street but on the courtyard, with poor furniture and a very high window almost impossible to fully close, so not really silent.

Breakfast is served in a beautiful old hall, but is very poor, with rusk, jam, wrapped croissant and a coffee machine like those you find in offices.

Price was ok.

Location is ok, close to train station and local markets

Staff was kind, not warm
