“A nice hotel in the wrong place”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 April 2011

If I would just judge this hotel by its rooms and services, this hotel would probably get a higher grade. The rooms are small but enough, the restaurant serves a decent breakfast and they run a shuttle bus to the hotel. Good enough! The problem is the place. Situated close to a beach that could have been lovely and in a neighbourhood of other hotels it could have been a paradise. But someone placed a big road between the hotel and the so called beach and then the local garbage company decided to dump some of the trash on the beach making this a far from paradise experience. This probably scared off all tourists which would explain why all the restaurants seems to have gone out of business leaving only closed, worn down, empty, dirty buildings on the opposite side of the road. If you just need an overnight stay close to the airport, or doesn't dare to challenge the Italian traffic in Catania, this would be a decent hotel to sleep in - but nothing more! And by the way - don't try the bar unless you have plenty of time since it takes about 5 min each time for the personnel to figure out how the cash register works. With two people before you in the line you would get your drink within 15 min!!! And WHY do hotels keep on demanding payment for Internet! Today it should be free for the guest just as no hotel would ever even think about charging you for how much water you use in the shower!

Did not live up to the websites description of the great location by a beautiful beach and swimming pool access. The only reason I stayed here was for the close access to the airport and free shuttle into town and the aiport. And purposely arrived early from beautiful Taormina to enjoy the beach and swimming pool. I was so disappointed to find a hotel off a noisy, busy highway, with the pool roped off and located next to the busy highway, and the beach across the street was not attractive at all. It looked like a dirt road leading to a nasty littered beach that I wouldn't want my dog to use.
The hotel and rooms needed renovation, the molding and wallpaper were coming off and needed a good scrub too. The restaurant meal was terrible, hard to find a bad meal in Italy anywhere, but this was awful and the service was too. It took almost a half hour to get our check, and this was not for lack of our patience, they just kept forgetting and the restaurant was not even half full. Catania is very seedy except for the center plaza, so I would skip it altogther if possible, or just use this hotel and Catania as a quick stop before your last flight home.

The hotel write ups you are reading can often be misleading but hopefully I can put things in a good context.... I personally have traveled all over the world and have been to Italy 5 times but this is only my second visit to Sicily, of which I have experienced the whole Island and stayed at many hotels during the last visit. After painstakingly reading reviews I settled on this hotel for this trip. Unfortunately its location almost appears to be in an old war zone that hasn't quite been revitalized yet. The location is truly out of the way, that is it is not in walking distance of anything... really. They mention a shuttle that goes into town but that is only somewhat convenient if you are on their schedule, which has the last shuttle coming back from town at 7:30pm, that means dinner is only available for you at the hotel restaurant. The restaurant wasn't too bad, but you will pay an average of 23 euro for a meal, with out wine.
The rooms; I had reserved an “Executive” room which would give me the beach view according to their hotel information. Unfortunately my room, and I believe all the rooms, do not have a beach view! This is mainly due to the design of the hotel which has the restaurant and conference center part of the hotel in the front blocking much of the view for the 2nd story. Also, along the beach there are commercial properties in which the locals have to go through in order to go to the beach... these facilities guarantee you will not see any beach area from any part of the hotel. I need to comment on these commercial areas here.... they were all sporting plenty of graffiti and did not appear to be kept up at all... it added to the war zone effect. Back to the "Executive" room, it was very small, and the "King" size bed was 2 twins pushed together. The bed was harder than any firm bed I have ever experienced. My colleague had a standard room and it was exactly the same as my "Executive" room, he also had serious mosquito problems, (carriers of the Swine Flu and West Nile virus), and from the looks of the smashed remnants on the walls I would say previous visitors had the same problem. They told me all of the "King" beds were the same, of which they showed me another room, which was indeed the same. I was disappointed enough to try and check out of the hotel and go uptown to the Excelsior hotel, which is a much better hotel experience, but they would not allow me to check out unless I was willing to forfeit my payment for the week!
That is where my extreme disappointment comes into play... I asked two times to be released without leaving behind $$$ but all they knew was I prepaid to get a good rate and they couldn't charge back my credit card. I have never experience a situation as hard headed as this was... normally a provider of credit card services (someone who can accept a credit card) also has the ability to charge back on your card. I will never quite understand why they did not try to accommodate my release other than just not wanting to lose the business, but I'm hoping that that is just what this write up will do.... their web information is misleading and their attitude is worse.
Also, the wireless internet they advertise is very very expensive... I purchased the 24 hour package ... it was 18 euro or $24.00, and the 24 hour had to be consecutive hours.

Just go in town... Excelsior, The Liberty, or the Uno would be better bets for you and your experience of Catania will be enhanced.

Take Care!

This is a big conference hotel with little personality. Though it is right across from the beach, they successfully built it almost completely without a view. Out the back of the hotel is a large lovely wooded park, perfect for a stroll or picnic. Through the park is the huge Auchan Hypermarket - with all the items you thought about buying during your trip to Sicily...at a fraction of the price. This is the perfect place to buy gifts, culinary items, liquors, cheese, ceramics, and baked items. Hotel is close to the airport (they say 2 km), it took us less than 10 minutes. This was really a convenient stay for the night before our departure. Breakfast is like the hotel...perfectly adequate but uninspired.

The reason why I come to Catania is business, for this reason I always like to stay close to the airport. The previous year I stayed at the Romano (see my review) so this year while booking I decided to book the hotel next to the Romano which is the NH Parco degli aragonesi. BTW I also checked the prices and the NH was 20€ cheaper.

This is a typical business hotel as I wrote in the title it is very close to the airport. It also has a shuttle going back and forth. Upon your arrival you can call them and they come to pick you up.

Room was ok, clean with bathtub and cable tv.
We stayed a lot in the hotel since we had to interview several people. At night we ate at the hotel since we were tired and food was ok, even if a bit over priced.
