Most of the interior was closed except for guided tours and the church was okay. We felt like we were in the way of the university students and didnt want to disturb them. Cute little courtyards in spring with pink blossoms. Not much to see. Go to a museum nearby instead.

We went on the guided tour in English. Tours run every hour. The guide explained the history of the monastery and how the Etna eruption and earthquake affected it. The guide was very informative and the tour was extensive. An excellent tour, I recommend it!

We stumbled across this on the way to the Castle. It is a huge beautiful building which is run down with doors missing. Inside it’s the size of a football pitch ! Very atmospheric and not commercial at all only small fee to go in the tower. Integrated into the university so doesn’t feel neglected . We only looked in the basilica part but would go back again to explore more.

We would not have thought about taking this tour but for recommendation from folks at Atripical. So glad we did it! A leisurely paced walk through an interesting building and grounds with loads of history.

Just go and see to understand. It is also an example of great restoration. Don't miss this place in Catania. The neighborhood around has been requalified too thanks to the fact that the college has moved in. So it is nice just to wander around.
