Arriving in Alghero, by car, we drove past the tower of the old city and along the seafront and there it was - Villa Las Tronas, majestic in its isolation on its own little headland. There were two sets of wrought iron gates and sensibly we went to the ones that had a bell outside. The gates swung open and in we drove to the car park. We walked up through the "park" to reception leaving our bags in the car. At reception we were warmly greeted and offered a complimentary glass of prosecco which we enjoyed on the outside terrace with its stunning coast-line view. The receptionist also took our car keys to arrange for our luggage to be taken to our room. So far, things were looking good. We had booked, on-line, a double room with park view for 2 nights including Italian breakfast at the rate of 239€ a night. After a light lunch we were shown to our room on the first floor and that's when everything started to unravel. Small, stark, austere, rug-less, plastic shower curtain, motel-style wall-mounted hideous hairdryer (although another better model was hanging in a bag on the wall), hard bed and pillows, exhausted towels and linen. We were stunned by what was no more than 3 star ambience. After regaining our equilibrium it was back downstairs to reception to ask if this was indeed the double room we had booked and if, perhaps, an alternative was available. When asked what I didn't like about it I mentioned the words luxury and 5 star and whether they were aware that they were both missing from our room. At this point I was brought back to reality by the words "basic room". This I was told was the "basic room" that I had booked. There was no mention of the word basic in my confirmation only "double" and since when did a 5 star hotel have basic rooms. Smaller, larger, suites, sea-view - yes, but never basic. Seeing my obvious distress a generous, discounted offer was made on a suite on the first floor with a sea view. We had a look at it but, to be honest, apart from having a terrace and an extra sitting room, in our opinion it was pretty much more of the same for much much more. I have to say that Villa Las Tronas were trying to make an effort to accommodate us and they tried again with a larger but same standard room right next door to where we were, as nothing else was available. We accepted the larger room and in we moved, but still not happy with their concept of 5 star as everything in the room apart from size was as before. Breakfast was so unsophisticated, poorly presented and limited that you just shook your head in disbelief that any hotel with any self respect, let alone a 5 star, would have the front to think this was good enough for their guests. Eggs cooked how you like were included as well as bacon but should your tastes have wandered to an omelette that would set you back 8 euros. Our two teapots had obviously lost their original lids and these had been replaced by some upturned saucers - very elegant. In my opinion Villa Las Tronas is way past its use by date and needs significant investment to bring it back out of the shadows - nothing luxurious or 5 star about it.

I can't say enough wonderful things about this hotel. From the moment we arrived to the morning we left (three-night stay), we felt like royalty in this beautiful, historic property. The service was old-school impeccable; you really felt like the staff cared about you and would do anything to make your stay as wonderful as possible. It's an easy walk to the old city of Alghero. We did not have dinner on the property but took advantage of the beautiful breakfast buffet each morning outside on the terrace. To be fully honest what made this stay so wonderful for us was our room on the corner of the first floor (second floor in US terms) - room 118 - with a terrace facing the sea. The corner is special because there is only one room next to you. There are five rooms facing the sea on this level that share a large outdoor space that is divided into five individual terraces, separated by low level dividers. You see your neighbors when you're out there at the same time but it's actually quite fun - you can talk or ignore; it's easy to do both. Villa Las Tronas is perfectly situated for maximum enjoyment of the sea - the reason you probably go to Sardinia in the first place. Promise you will not be disappointed if you stay in room 118; highly recommend.

Just returned from Alghero, had a wonderful relaxing stay in Villa las Tronas, which was a beautifully situated hotel on the sea, a walkway from the mediaeval beautiful walled city of Alghero. Staff were genuinely friendly and informatively helpful, room was spacious and kept beautifully clean by maids, food was delicious, especially our evening prosecco and canapés! Access to snorkelling not the easiest, rocky seas, but helpful lifeguards. Added intrigue provided by the aristocratic owners on the 3rd floor, who were spectacularly unfriendly and arrogant, but added a touch of 'Adam's Family' to those who remember Morticia! Loved every minute! 2girls on reception were just lovely!

Room Tip: Sea view, 2nd floor, quieter, but 1st floor have own balcony, that guests don't realise can be overlooked from 2nd floor!

Disaappointed with lack of services; breakfast coffee was terrible.
Room nice, but hotel is more of a 3 star and not 5 star. We had to carry our bags
when we checked in. The two staff members at the desk were very helpful.
Hotel was way over priced for the value. No one at the pool to help with umbrellas
and towels.

Room Tip: Request a balcony
