Overall the Hotel Italia is a family run indepedent hotel with a lot more character than a chain establishment. The main areas are well presented and the rooms served to a high standard.
We booked a standard room which was larger than average with a generously-sized en-suite bathroom that was only just smaller than the bedroom itself. Being a loft room it was quite warm and the air conditioning unit didn't appear to relieve this but opening the windows did cool things down nicely. The bed was comfortable and the noise from the street outside didn't disrupt a good night sleep. The voices and noise from the next door room was a little unexpected so it is worth bearing in mind that there is virtually no sound proofing but do not let that put you off - it is only a minor criticism.
Breakfast was included in the room rate, usually 12 euros per person, and was very good. There was a great selection of pastries, cereals, yoghurts, cheese, cold meats, local sweet breads and rolls. There was also some scrambled and boiled eggs which were on a heated plate (not cooked to order). Drinks included concentrated juices, water and hot drinks from a machine. Best to avoid the machine drinks and ask the waiter for fresh coffee at additional cost.
The hotel is located 10-15 mins walk from Piazza delle Erbe and a little further to the Arena. There's plenty to see along the different possible routes into town and maps are available from reception.
The recent addition of a sauna area and well-equipped games room in the basement area give additional value. They are open every day from 4.30pm-8.30pm and are a good place to relax and have fun after a day of exploring.
If you are staying in Verona for a couple of days it is worth going to Pizzeria Mameli (Via Goffredo Mameli, 98), just a few minutes walk from the hotel. The pizzas and tiramisù are divine with quick service, and while the staff do not speak English it is a fair bit cheaper than the restaurants in the tourist areas.
