“OK stay, but wish we chose somewhere else”
Reviewed 4 July 2012

We didn't mind this hotel, but wish we chose somewhere else. Next time we will definitely stay in Venice proper in one of the smaller palazzo hotels.

Location:
I chose this hotel knowing that we would need to take a shuttle. What a mistake it was. The first time getting off the Vaporetto in Venice proper and taking the shuttle to the hotel was truly magical. However, when you have to wait for up to 40 min under the scorching sun for the none air-coned and often crowded shuttle (Unlike the vaporetto there is no space outside to stand, so the only breeze you will get is from the small windows in the cabin), the magic wears off pretty quickly. They really need to increase the number of shuttles, as every 40 min from St Marcs may sound ok, but it really can be a major pain. No seats or shades near the docks either which was also an issue, as the heat and the sun was almost unbearable while we were there. The extra 20min on a boat across a rough open water is something you can do without when you are already feeling run down from the heat or if you're prone to motion sickness.
Also, the fact that the shuttles are so sparse and it being on a different island from everything else makes it that much harder to plan your journey to/from the airport. I suppose it's ok if can afford 200 quid for the return trip from/to Marco Polo airport on the water taxi, but if you have to take the coach from Piazzale Roma to Treviso airport like we did, it's a hustle you can really do without out.

Room:
It was our anniversary, so we emailed them in advance and asked if it would be possible for them to get us a canal view. They said they will try to give us an upgrade, but it depends on availability. When we got there, we were given a room with a view to brick walls. We did ask them again, but the answer was "all the rooms are fully booked and paid for".
In fairness our room was a very good looking, tastefully decorated and cozy room with bathroom almost the same size as the bedroom. Also they did get us a bottle of Prosecco, some chocolate coated strawberries and rose petals (albeit fake ones) on the bed which was very lovely, though as we checked in early we didn't get them on arrival.

Hotel service:
LOVED the swimming pool. Amazing view and a perfect way to cool down when you're sun struck from walking around Venice all morning. Yes it is small and can get busy, but lovely nevertheless. The swimming pool is the reason I'm giving this hotel 3 stars and not 2.
I understand it's the Hilton blah blah, but single espresso will costs you 5 euros when a local cafe down the pier serves them for 1 euro and a lovely canal side hotel in Venice serves them for 3 euros. 9 euros/day to use the internet. A panini (with a bit of green and ready salted crisps on the side) for one, bottled water and two glasses of Bellini cost us 50 euros, which was by far the most expensive and tasteless half meal we had in Venice. The stuff are very professional, polite and somewhat inpersonal but wiling to help as you would expect from a chain hotel.

It is full of Hilton Honours members (guests exchanging tales of various Hiltons around the world can be often overheard on the shuttle boat) , so I'd imagine it may be worth it if you are an Honours member who likes to feel special and indulged. But if you're not, not worth the hustle.

Dear Guest,
Thank you for taking the time to post a review on this website.
I have carefully reviewed your comments and I thank you for sharing your opinion on our property.
We were sorry to learn that you were disappointed with your recent stay and that you found our location not to your satisfaction.
We acknowledge and appreciate your constructive criticism regarding the shuttle service, but on the other hand we would like to inform you that boats run every 20 to 40 minutes between the hotel and the city centre in Zattere (5 minutes) and San Mark’s Square (15 minutes). Our guests have a guaranteed seat on board, as boats do not offer standing places, which is not always the case with public transportation.
Beside our complimentary shuttle boat, the private Alilaguna line stops also in front of our Hotel connecting the hotel to the Airport and the Cruise Harbour.

We also regret that the upgrade to a room with view was not available, however your stay has coincided with a full occupancy time and in this case unfortunately we cannot accommodate special requests as yours. We are pleased anyway that you have appreciated the interior design and the amenities supplied for your anniversary.

We are also glad that you loved the pool and the Skyline Bar and we would like to assure you that prices in our bars and restaurants are in line with the offer proposed from other five star hotels in Venice.

We do hope that despite your disappointment on this occasion, we have the opportunity of welcoming you back to the hotel at some point in the future.
Best regards.

First warning -- this is a big hotel with big hotel service. The flip side is that it had big hotel rooms which were much more spacious than rooms in historic city centers. The rooms were clean, quiet, and everything was well run. The hotel itself had tons of amenities including an AMAZING rooftop pool and Skybar. This place easily had the best views of Venice.

The only potential downside is the location. It's a little ways from Venice city central and maybe not ideal if you want to walk at night. The flip side (and positive for us) is that the island of Guideca is absolutely charming and we'd stay here again if going go Venice. The hotel also has a really great shuttle to San Marco square that runs until 1 am!! There's also nearby waterbus/vaporetto stop at Palanca (10 minute walk) that is ultra convenient. Vaporetto's also run until 1am.

Absolute pleasure to stay there. Arrived by private taxi and service upon arrival was quick and courteous. Room was decor was great but very little storage space. Staff helpful whenever we needed advice.
Only moan is the price of food and drink. However, it is the same in all hotels but why should it be?
Shuttle service was really useful.
Would we stay there again, definitely yes!

Stayed for one night in this hotel and it was a great experince. It might be a bit far from the main attractions in Venice, but they provide a free shuttle to solve this. In addition the rooms were super clean with an excellent standard, especially the air condition as 90% of the hotels in Venice have a weak air conditioning system, but in this hotel it was completely impressing. People also were friendly an give us an optimum service.

This hotel, situated on Guidecca island is a converted flour mill.Whilst it has been tastefully restored and has attractive spacious public areas, it does lack a "soul" and the only Venetian "feel" about it, is the Morano glass displayed in cabinets.

When booking in, be sure to be shown on the hotel map the location of your room before committing yourself.
We were given room 125 in the Canaletto wing - this room is a corner room with windows on 2 sides overlooking a internal courtyard which has building works going on.
Because the windows take up 2 entire walls, internally this has meant a poorly designed bedroom area with a single wardrobe, half taken up with a chest of 3 drawers and a safe - consquently there is virtually no hanging space - fine if you are a single traveller who is only staying for one night!!! We were there for 3 nights and we unable to unpack our suitcases for the entire stay - as there is no other storage space in the room, our cases had to left on the floor and suitcase stand the entire time - I have never felt so stressed on a holiday.
We did ask to move or for an upgrade but were told they were fully booked.
Out of proportion to the room, the marble bathroom was spacious. Separate bath and shower - tho the shower door could not be opened fully due to the cast-iron pillar (part of the original building) - again poorly designed lay-out. Also dangerous as the glass door banged against the pillar 6 inches away.
Ladies, there is no socket closeby to a mirror for drying your hair -I had to move a chair into the area just inside the door (full length mirror on outside of bathroom door) - fortunately my own dryer has a long cable which just about reached from the socket by the desk in room.
Also the overhead lighting in this small lobby area is automatic and keeps turning off - this can be switched back on by waving your hairdryer up in the air!
No complimentary water in room - be sure to stock up in Venice before you get to the hotel as there are no shops, bars or restaurants near the hotel and the hotel prices are extortionate - more of that to come...
The hotel provides a water taxi over to main Venice which runs roughly half hourly.
Returning can involve a long wait at busy times as the boats get very full.
The water between Guidecca Island and Venice is very choppy and getting on and off the boats can be a bit scary - this should be a major consideration for those people with mobility problems, especially as you have to climb down rather steep steps into the seating area - the boat crew ,we found, were rather surly, and not particularly mindful of helping passengers on and off.
Given the extreme heat (it was only June) there should be seating and shade for guests waiting to embark - there is none at all.
Breakfast choice extensive though the dining areas are utiltarian and unattractive - furniture shabby and in one of the areas the tables were temporary folding ones! Looks like at best a 2/3 star establishment.
Other areas attractive and stylish.
Skyline bar offers stunning views accross to Venice but at a price - 16 euros for a gin and tonic!
Be warned the food prices are a total rip-off and extremely poor value for your hard-earned cash.
2 not very exciting club sandwiches with small portion of pale french fries plus 2 small glasses of poor quality rough red wine - wait for it - 75 euros!!!!
My husband asked a supervsior at reception, how could this be justified she laughed and just said, "a lot of people ask that" !!!
The problem is, if you want to eat elsewhere, you have to go by boat accross to Venice and sometimes you simply don't want to be bothered with the hassle.
My husband had a long chat with [very polite and friendly] reception staff on our checking out, pointing out the various problems and issues - we were given 40 euro voucher in compensation but at the end of the day, these people have no authority to really address problems and quite frankly, reading the Manager's responses to feedback given on Trip Advisor only offer platitudes that don't address the many valid points guests have taken the time and trouble to identify.
If you are looking for a true Venetian Experience do not stay at this hotel.
We will not return under any circumstances.

Dear Guest,
Thank you for filling out a review on Trip Advisor.
We always endeavour to offer the highest level of service and it would appear that on this occasion that we failed to meet your expectations.
Your comments will of course be forwarded to the relevant management for their attention.
We are pleased - anyway - that you loved the view from the Skyline Bar and we would like to assure you that prices in our bars and restaurants are in line with the offer proposed from other five star hotels in Venice.
We are sorry you did not enjoy our location in the Giudecca island, a nice and quieter location, only just a 12 minutes boat ride away from the crowded city centre which is specially appreciated from guests and visitors who like to enjoy a more relaxing side of Venice. It also hosts a number of good and excellent restaurants, some of them belonging to the old Venetian cooking tradition, which we will be glad to recommend at the next opportunity of a visit in Venice.
We do hope that despite your disappointment on this occasion, we will have the opportunity of welcoming you back to the hotel at some point in the future.
Best regards.
