Hotel Carlton on the Grand Canal
Ranked #144 of 385 Hotels in Venice
Reviewed 16 July 2012

Some other people have said that one problem with this hotel is that it is far from St. Marks Square. Let me say that was one thing that we liked about it. We stayed three great nights at the Carlton and the area around the hotel, while full of people, was nowhere near the crush of tourist throng that we witnessed the closer we walked to Rialto Bridge and St. Marks (we visitied in July). The room was at the back of the hotel on the ground floor facing a courtyard and was nicely decorated, the breakfast was great and the staff were very helpful. I would recommend this hotel to others.

We had 2 rooms booked for 3 nights in July. The location is the best thing about this hotel.
I had pre-booked a non-refundable stay for 2 nights here. Then discovered that I accidently double booked us for the last night of our stay. I tried in vain to change the date of our stay by 1 night, and even though the night I wanted to change to was more expensive, the hotel would not budge. Consequently, we had to book for 3 nights but left after 2.
The hotel was over run with a tour group at the time we were there so breakfast, although good, was a painstakingly slow experience.
The staff were polite but not overly helpful.
Our room was pretty good, but the shower was exceptionally small. I am a small person but every time I moved I knocked the taps and was scolded by the hot water twice.

Room Tip: Try and get a room away from the lifts and stairs to avoid the noise.

We had a short stay at this luxurious old school hotel...the staff are friendly and polite...the rooms a little old and the air conditioning could be better but other than that...a comfortable one night stay...located directly opposite the train station...

Room Tip: Probably get a room where the AC works better...

This hotel has a good location & the reception area is nice but the rooms standard is very poor, they are badly in need of a refurbishment. The Internet was free but extremely slow & very difficult to connect too. We had dinner in the hotel restaurant which was o.k but to be charged a 3.50 euro service charge each when we are guests of the hotel is ridiculous. We have been travelling around Europe for the last 3 weeks & this was the most disappointing.

The rooms at this hotel are truly tiny. There are even "short" bathtubs that require one to "balance" between two levels in taking a shower. Service is quite haphazard as well. Yet its location is perfect facing the grand canal

Room Tip: Ask for, and pay for , a grand canal facing room or you will be facing a dark wall. Beware, however...
