The Basilica has free entry but requires a fee if you wish to go on the balcony that surround the outside. To queue for this is situated near the exit of the Basilica. The Basilica is made up of spectacular mosaic walls and ceilings engulfed in gold. There is a queue inside on the right to view the lecture at the front where St Mark’s remains are; we didn’t feel the need to. This site is worth a look particularly if you appreciate the exterior architecture. The queue to enter goes down fairly quickly so do not let that put you off. No backpacks are allowed; staff will refuse entry and no photos are permitted whilst inside. You’ll find this in all Italian Basilicas.

The church of San Marco is world famous, its building stile is very different to most churches in Europe. Most amazing there was no entrance fee! But you have to wail in linke to get in. Well worth doing so.

We happened to be in Venice for Easter. Instead of standing in the long lines we decided to attend Easter Sunday Vespers and it was an Amazing beautiful ceremony with the Patriarch and all of his entorogue.
If you are there on a religious holiday you should go whether you are Catholic or not.

Almost couldn’t be bothered to queue but it was so worth it once in - especially the terrace with views over San Marcos and the horses...beautiful basilica with a real 12th century feel and mosaics in incredible condition. Top must see in Venice.

Free entry and a magnificent spectacle. No pictures or bags allowed so make sure you take it to the luggage hold before you start queuing. You have to pay once inside to go up the levels, and see the treasure but you can walk around the main basilica for free
