Owner description: It is said that Napoleon called San Marco "the drawing room of Europe." And it is a breathtakingly beautiful place. But the square has long been a lure for massive numbers of pigeons, drawn by the massive numbers of tourists who readily feed them. While the tourists happily post for photos amid the flock, there are concerns that the birds' presence--and what they leave behind--will damage the centuries old architecture and art work.

“Find the right Perspective”
Reviewed 6 May 2012

My first 3 days in Venice, the Square was completely flooded, and I entered the Square from the North East. This did not give me a good perspective of the Cathedral, as I came from a small alley. Plus, it was raining and grey the first few days, so I never really looked up.

My fourth day in Venice, the sky was blue, it was great sunny day, and my companion and I, after touring most of Venice, entered the Square from the West. WOW!! I had no idea how impressive the cathedral really was. It was such a shock when we both came around the corner and the street opened up into the huge square with St. Marks at the far end. We both stopped in our tracks, and couldn't speak for a few minutes.

Visiting here is definitely a 5 star adventure, but you really need to get the right perspective to fully enjoy it.

“The living room of Europe!”
Reviewed 6 May 2012

The place, the church, the campanille, the clock and most of all the twilight with the sound of music in the air, awesom atmosphere.
I don't like the tourist ords at the high seasons!

“Where all roads lead...”

Sadly one part was closed off for building work, as was part of St Marks Basilica, so will be nicer when it is finished.

“Crowded but a great experience!”
Reviewed 6 May 2012

We did not enter any of the buildings as the lines were very long. It was a public holiday, May 1st, which may have had something to do with the crowds. It was well worth seeing from the outside! Great shopping , but worth checking out many venues before choosing your souvenirs. The prices vary quite a bit from store to store, which is refreshing.

“Nice but too touristy”
Reviewed 6 May 2012

Obviously, this is a highlight of Venice, however, the place is too touristy to just sit and enjoy. Try and take pics in the early early morning to avoid the crowd.
