At this hotel we spent a noisy and hot night in a room with no air conditioning.

In the en-suite bathroom the shower was not enclosed except by a curtain – so inevitably the bathroom flooded comprehensively when the shower was used. This was (to say the least) not a very satisfactory arrangement.
We did enjoy the good Buffet Breakfast though.

We stayed 9 nights at the Hotel Igea, using Padua as a base to see Venice and take some day trips. We booked a double superior for 115 euros/night. The bathroom was amazing, with a heated towel rack and HUGE tiled shower with a place to sit down. Other features: extremely comfortable bed, lots of drawer space, a sofa, a mini-bar fridge (we kept white wine in it), spotless housekeeping. Very quiet room except for the pigeons outside at night! But the noise was more charming than annoying.

It is simple to get to the train station. Walk a block to the main drag and catch a #4, #19, or #24 bus to the train station It takes 5 minutes. The Padova card includes bus transportation. When it expires, buy a carnet of 10 bus tickets for 12 euros. There are frequent trains to Venice. We took day trips to Verona, Vicenza and Ravenna. Ravenna was a little farther and we had to change trains, but the mosaics were one of the highlights of the trip. We caught the local bus back to the Igea every time.

Around the Igea is a great bakery, several fruit markets and "convenience" stores, and several restaurants.

We saved a lot of money staying at the 3 star Igea instead of a Venice hotel. The round-trip train fare to Venice was less than 12 euros a day for both of us. Of course we saw the Scrovegni Chapel frescoes--- make online reservations before you arrive. We also had an interesting tour of the medical school, seeing the old anatomy theater where cadaver dissections were performed.

The only problem was that the hotel could not get us a cab at 5:30 a.m. so we walked 10 minutes to the bus station to catch the bus to the Venice airport. (Less than 8 euros for two tickets)

We definitely recommend this way of seeing Venice and the Veneto.

Hotel is simple, clean and quite. Garage for bikes and for cars is 100 meters away. Staff people are accommodating, helpful and speak English. Our room booked by travel agent associated with Girolibero as a double room was large and had a seating sofa in addition to the queen bed. Buffet breakfast was fine and they also had a station where you could make your own boiled eggs. Hotel location is 5 to 10 minutes walk to major tourist attractions in town but the train station is rather far (I mean if you want to commute to Venice every single day).
Some notes: Padua is a very nice city and requires at least one full day for sightseeing. Make efforts to visit the Scrovegni chapel because Giotto frescoes in reality cannot be compared with viewing them in any sort of reproductions. Basilica di Sant Anthonio (located very close to Igea hotel) is something special for both religious people and for art lovers. Sansovino and Lombardi reliefs behind Sant Anthonio’s tomb are astonishing, so are the Crucifixion frescoes by Zevio on the opposite transept.

Prompt repsonse to intial online enquiry. Happy to see us when we arrived at 9.45 pm. Room clean and bright, excellent breakfast. Well, placed for University, town centre and bus station - little longer to walk to trains but overall a great place to stay if you want a base to stay in Padova.

  • Liked — Clean and efficient
  • Disliked — I couldn't find out how to work the extractor fan in the bathroom
  • Tips/Secrets — Check out the eateries in the Ghetto area, if you go Venice be sure to make one of your visits by local bus service, more interestinf secenic route.

Definitely a bad experience. We have been booking hotels all over Padova for the past three years and have never been treated with less sympathy or respect than in Hotel Igea. We got there on a hot humid night on september 23rd and thought we were getting some air conditioning. Little did we know that they had shut down the whole system to clean it before the winter (we understand that it is also a heating system). We left the window open and went out for dinner but returned to a hot stuffy room without the benefit of a fan or anything to cool off. It wasn't a pleasant night. That night we obtained no help whatsoever from the staff. It would have been only normal to have emergency fans for the time being. The next morning we told them we were not staying for the second night, and explained our reasons. No excuses, no sympathy, only spite and the accusation of being 'the only ones complaining about it', as if the hotel's great expenses regarding air conditioning concerned us in the least. We were basically treated like troublemakers, accused of being abusive by a stubborn and incompetent woman, and left the hotel without a goodbye. If that is three-star treatment I am Santa Claus. Before you give up and go to the Igea think twice. There are plenty of cheap cute hotels all around downtown Padova. You don't want to remember a stay in this pretty city as a bad experience.
