I have had this experience four times in Italy, and I think other travellers should be aware that this is getting all too common. When you book, it advertises the room as including breakfast. The actual confirmation misses this out. Then when you check out, they ask for 60 euros to pay for the breakfast you thought was included. Still, I had forty minutes to spare, and that is what it took to point out that it was not indeed 'the website's fault, not ours' but theirs. Even when they agreed not to charge, there was still a woman in the back office shrieking in fury about me. So we slunk out of the hotel feeling like common criminals.
So I wouldn't let this put you off booking, but would urge you to print the screen which says that breakfast is included from here or hotels. com or from wherever you book and make it clear when you book in, as I suspect this is a nice little earner.
Having said that, the hotel is clean and spacious and bang opposite the station, so great if you are then taking the overnight train to France. The much discussed breakfast is nice as is the lovely lady who manages it in the morning. She is the nicest person who works there!
